Manual penalty, Thin Content. Will I get it removed?

Hi Guys,

First post to the site. Been reading a lot of interesting threads on here.

I have just received a manual penalty on one of my websites. Was getting about 25k a day down to around 200 overnight :P I was hit by I believe a Panda with Thin Content. I'm surprised that I got hit by Thin content as it actually has around 1000 words per page, Or is that not enough?

My site is a typical money site, It has all unique content however it is focused on getting money from ads and affiliate links.

I've changed my theme, removed all ads and affiliate links, removed less keywords from the pages and added some more unique content.

I've asked for a manual review, What's the likeliness of me getting the penalty removed? Or should i just get a new domain and start again?

Have you ever used PBN's?

There are a few authoritative blogs that think they do this to people who get caught buying PBN links, and I pretty much believe them beause 2 of my sites got hit simultaneously and they both had PBN links.

1000 words per page is more than enough - providing it's good stuff, of course. I would hold off on starting again. Remove a good % of aff links and add some more good content and see where you stand. Do this and there's a decent chance you can recover.
 
yes first you should remove the content after that post new content and do seo you will get back your position easily
 
25K a day is really amazing though, u must have been banking with that kind of traffic.
 
I managed to get this exact type of penalty removed so don't give up on the site just yet - especially seeing as you were getting 25k traffic a day.

Here's what I'd do:

1. Remove or noindex any articles which you deem poor quality - if there are any at all.
2. Take a handful of your articles and turn them from 1000 word articles into something much bigger - just write on a topic until it has been completely covered.
3. Remove the majority of the affiliate links from these articles - you can probably leave the ads as they are.
4. Change the timestamp on these articles so that they appear back on the homepage (I'm assuming it is Wordpress and that the latest post appear on the homepage).
5. Then resubmit.

When a manual reviewer comes along, they see links to all your updated articles which are high in content and low in affiliate links. They won't check every single article.

A site that can attract 25k visitors a day is worth fighting for.
 
There is no guarantee that your site will recover. You are lucky it is a manual penalty, which translates into a higher chance of recovery. If you have done enough to get the penalty removed, you will surely recover, but gradually, even after the penalty has been revoked.
 
Good luck OP. Your situation sucks.

What do you think might have caused the penalty? Were you doing anything shady such as PBN? How were your backlinks? There might some things apart from what most people have suggested here. Was it just owner neglect on this domain that got you in trouble?

I had about 5 pages with only 1 page without affiliate links and one ad still in widget.

I didn't use any PBNs however used a link building tool which wont be the best of links. I also built a few myself.

Ok so I changed my theme, removed all adsense ads and affiliate links as well as adding more unique content however after asking for a manual review they declined stating that I was still in breach of their terms and conditions. My site is still pretty much keyword orientated so it's a EMD and has he keyword in the title, H1 etc so may give off a spam look?

I think my content is pretty good, all written by my own content writers and relates to what the keyword is about. Do you think i should remove all content and start again? make it look more natural instead of having the keyword in places so I can get ranked easier.

Yes near the end I was getting around 25k per day and the money from ads was unbelievable! My niche is in entertainment, nothing against their terms.

My site has a fixed first page based on my keyword, I think i'll take some of your guys advice and try and update with better content, maybe try a theme with a proper homepage instead of fixed. I think it's just because it looks spammy that they didn't remove the penalty.

My backlinks would have been alright I'd imagine, not too bad. I'm not sure what brought on the penalty, probably just the spammy look of the site. I think i need to make it more high quality.
 
The way I read it is that 1000 words could be classed as "thin content" if whats written isn't really "on point".

EDIT - I'd even consider reducing the word count, condensing the texts down to around 600 words and taking all the fluff/more boring/"off point" stuff out. Make each page more content rich .

If i get the penalty removed will they be monitoring the site? So if I then changed it again to include a couple more affiliate links and keywords back in the title, H1 etc to help with seo would they give me a penalty again or is it unlikely they will check again?
 
You have 5 pages with 1k words and they told you that the problem is "thin content"..... I don't know what is unclear here... the penalty was because of lacking content... Put 30 new articles and then contact them to check your site and Im sure there will be no problem
