Translating Articles: Is It a Good Idea?

Hi all,
Aside from English I know two more languages. So I have been thinking, could I get unique content by translating articles into English? Will I be penalized? Could I upload them to article directories such as Ezine Articles or make money with them on my blog or a site like HubPages?
Also, I'm on an English forum that has a lot of people from my country. If I use that forum to promote those articles, will people notice that they are duplicated? Is a translated article that noticeable?
I don't plan to use Google Translate, my English is really good, maybe to translate a word or two but never a whole article.
Any tips?

You won't get penalized by google, but if you copy from big brands (eg webmd, etc) the webmaster may find out and they'll DMCA you.

I once found a clickbank vendor who had translated my page word-for-word and was using it to sell his product. All it took to bring him down was a 2 minute DMCA notice to his host...so do be careful where you copy from.

I did a few jobs as a translator and I'm very good at translating word-for-word, because my ability to write it myself is pretty low. Also, I plan to translate articles from some game, tech and health magazines. They do have websites, but most of the content is published in the paper version.
Also, how did you know he translated it word-for-word? Do you speak another language or did he use the same theme and images?

Make sure whatever you are translating is your own work, not copied articles from another source. Google could hardly penalise for stuff like this. Never tried it though.

I wouldn't suggest translating word-for-word however you could do a summary in your own words and translate that but there is no guarantee that you'll be 100% safe from getting a DMCA. The best way to go is to write your own articles and you'll be surprised to see that once you get the hang of it you'll write much faster than it would normally take you to translate

If you translate the articles in a readable way then you should be fine. I've done that in the past and had no problems at all.

I am doing this and never got problem But i am using offshore hosting for hosting my websites. If you can translate articles into readable articles or if you cheap source for translation then just do it.

^ Plus, large sites such as suggested might well have translated their articles already, so I imagine you would, indeed, risk getting flagged by Google.

Not a google issue but you could face issues from websites you steal. This againt would depend upon how you promote and how strict they are in guarding their intellectual property. May be make changes after translating to make your version seemingly different.

I use translated content on my sites whenever I have a chance. I run the content thru Bing translator (their algo should be somewhat different from Google's) and then I correct and change as required. There's basically no phrase that doesn't require correction, so a lot of human intervention is required and that's why I wouldn't worry much for the article not coming out unique enough. In my experience this type of content ranks as well as the really unique one. Translated articles are then more than great for web 2.0 sites.

Word for word isn't a good idea. If can rewrite the post into your own way using those languages, it'll be great.

Google Translate+ Manual fixing up is probably the best way, I tried Bing Translate and it appeared to be of a much lower quality. As long as the site you are scraping and translating from is lesser known with not as much resources you shouldn't worry about being shutdown or sued.

Don't translate word to word, steal basic concept and rewrite your own way.

The results will be negative on other engines if you translate them right. You can do it, but try and spin the content before. Plagiarism is not safe!

google will not penalize it, is a great source and if you are worry about dmca just host your site offshore, there are plenty of hosting providers that don't care about dmca complains
