Why Tumblr Sucks

Tumblr is one of the easiest social networks to gain a following on. I know from experience, having over 300,000 followers at one point. Eventually I got hit with a ban, and lost about 200,000 followers and some good revenue. My blogs were all SFW and did nothing spammy at all. For monetization I simply sent traffic to a quality site with adsense ads. I'm not here to complain, but Tumblr has basically a "no mercy rule" when it comes to bans. So if you want to start a SFW following somewhere, maybe a funny pics, quotes, or humor account, I recommend trying elsewhere. Tumblr is really nailing down on spam, and accidentally is getting stuff that isn't spam in the process. But their support process doesn't warrant any mercy or personal attention to your issue.

So basically if you want to get started in social media, long term, I recommend trying a network where you get warnings and don't necessarily lose everything at random if a mistake was made. I've already learned my lesson and journeyed on to other social networks! If you are all about the churn and burn idea of spamming social networks, or in the NSFW niche, this doesn't really apply to you, but if you're new to the social media thing, maybe other social networks are a better direction to start in!

Some accounts of mine got suspended and some have not and still make me money. It depends. Overall, I would say that it sucks for marketing. q

Yeah, I got canned for a few accounts that were to recipe related niches. :/ Yet I still see people promoting NSFW blogs without any bans thus far, lol.

It's the inconsistency there, I mean Tumblr is superb when it comes to SEO. My Tumblr money site still ranks well for some keywords simply because it accrued 77,000 backlinks from Tumblr. If you can grow some authority accounts you can get a site a solid backlink profile that appears very natural. I think a lot of regular users are getting mad as some large blogs that were very popular have been banned recently. They are basically trying to get rid of affiliate marketing entirely, but there is some unintentional collateral.

It sucked when they went from do follow to no follow, but you still need some no follow links, so it is not all bad.

Have you tried to contact them and tell that your blog was deleted by mistake? I've heard it worked for some people.

Most likely you was reported by your competition. You can try and email them; sometimes they'll restore your accounts.

Chances are minimal to get your account restored. I've just lost a 10K account without any kind of monetizing. Never got a reply from the support.

Hey Mentalist, I remember talking with you from my Tumblr journey thread.

I see Tumblr hasn't changed much from the past year or two, they can and will ban blogs for "affiliate marketing" or whatever even if you're not linking to any other sites. They are completely random to bans, there's been times I've tracked spammy blogs that go months without bans, and other times I create a blog and follow the rules only to get banned a few days later. I've even had blogs that did absolutely nothing after creation that got banned some weeks later. Basically, always be prepared for a ban regardless of what your blog is doing or how long it's been alive.

Making the move on to other social networks is a smart move, there's plenty of great traffic sources and backlinking opportunities out there besides Tumblr, and each have their own policies. Tumblr still holds as a good traffic source and also a good backlinking source, however it's never reliable and should never be used as a primary traffic source to your site. Building up blogs naturally (very few or no following/liking/reblogging) without consistent links outside of Tumblr especially for new blogs and making sure to use tons of spintax on them (if automating them) has been my best method from past experiences.

Just sharing tips for those still into it that might help make blogs last longer.

did you guys use bots at all?? How old were your accounts? Did you run them through proxies? Were they public or private proxies?

I have some NSFW pics blogs that I run manually from my home ip address. I've had these blogs since 2012. I do post a link to my website on all pics. Between the 4 blogs I have 50K followers. I've never posted affiliate ads directly from these blogs.

I've never had any bans..I've never used bots either but I'm considering using tumblingjazz.

What gives?

From there, I used that blog to jumpstart (reblog) new blogs that I created. That lead to the numbers I have today. I'm wondering if the follow/unfollow action is what Tumblr picks up on. I also read a comment saying that bots were only okay for uploading on Tumblr.

Also, my NSFW blogs are secondary blogs, not my primary.

I was actually just about to bring up this point. I have a journey thread that I started, where I explain I've been using Tumblr to advertise websites, affiliate links, direct links to products - instead of using a bot to do any of the follow/unfollow actions, I just have a constant stream of content posting every 30 minutes, 24/7. Every post has a link and a clickthrough link - I gain followers from the tag discovery and reblogs/likes. It's no where near 100,000 followers, of course, but it's also led to a very ardent following that I do have, where I know the people who are following me genuinely appreciate the content and don't mind reposting my links with it.

Something to look into, I've been making a little chunk of cash each day using basically three accounts queued to the max - something I'm working to upscale as time goes on. It may not be bank breaking, but it's practically auto pilot because I've never had bans.

How many followers do you get a day from this strategy? Does the number of followers change by how big the blog is?
