how to discourage your competitors so they stop trying?

every day there are 3 or 4 ip addresses that will come to one of my sites. I have a feeling this is a competitor or an seo company who is working hard on their seo and just checking rankings. I am scared because eventually they might outrank me.

How can I discourage competitors so they give up and stop trying? I wasn't sure if I should include the previous paragraph in the question, it's kind of not relevant. For answering this question, you can ignore, or consider, the previous paragraph.

You could try blocking their IPs so they can't see your site. It wouldn't discourage them but they wouldn't be able to spy on you as well maybe. Other than that, the only way you can discourage them is by getting so big that they realize you're never gonna be unseated.

Don't waste your time. They can use proxies, VPN's etc. You don't even know if these are legit users of your website or not. No sense in being paranoid. Just do it better than them.

Personally I would take it as a compliment that they are checking me out

Better you keep your focus on More Target Goals. because One day you find some Visitors & 2nd day few Other People trying to compete. So Best way is to keep what you do..Target on Traffic.

It happens every day on my sites and like Zombie Pop says, don't waste your time worrying about that. I used to spend time thinking about stopping them and such, but that is such a waste of energy.

Take the compliment and move forward.

If you don't rank, your competitors won't care looking at your site, so you seem to do something right. Get used to it and make sure to check your backlinks often, once you rank for really competitive terms you'll see more shit than people just looking...DDOS, negative SEO attacks, but that's just jealous people unable to rank their own sites

It could be some interested visitors who like coming back to your site. So don't worry about that as there is nothing you could do to prevent their access.

I rank my sites pretty much exclusively using my PBN's. They're all hidden links.

Specifically for the purpose of misleading my competitors, though, I build just one or two links from (quality) business directories etc, so that when they do backlink analysis they'll see my site ranking, with just one or two directory links, and think that it's easy all the way to town.
Then, when they've replicated what they think is my method, and fail to achieve the same (if any) results, they'll get discouraged and give up.

What you could do is block their IP addresses in your .htaccess file and then forward them to another web site from your hosting error page.

Here's a line of code to add to your .htaccess file (change the IP addresses to suit your situation)
deny from 123.45.6.7
deny from 133.45.6.8
