So we all know about (and probably use) adblock.

Now 5% of all people using the internet use adblock. 40% of Millenials (teenagers) use adblock, which means as time goes on - that percentage is going to go from an "annoying" 5% lost revenue, to 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%...

Now i am not saying that the sky is falling, but you cannot deny that it might in 10+ years time...

So if it does reach numbers like 50% (and there is a very good chance it will in a decade at this rate).

How do you think it will affect the internet?
Do you think Google the big ad companies will sit back and take it? Will they fight? How?
What do you think it means for IM?
Is there anything we can do about it as webmasters?

At the moment this one is looking quite serious but I am sure business giant like
Google, Amazon and many other big fishes are not going to seat quietly.

They will care about your block, If and only if your website content is so much valuable
and above all, is not available at any other website.

That's the impression i get. The only way it could work is if nearly all webmasters did it. And let's face it - it's not going to happen unless something drastic happens.

IMHO 5% seems like an inflated number. Also, I dont think it is a real threat, yet.

I think part of the solution is serving more relevant ads that people are interested in. Because blocking technology will improve as well, making it harder to detect.

The solution could be just that Google & Co pay a hefty sum of money to the owners of Adblock to "de-filter" their Adsense (or whatever) ads. That is if things get that serious. On second thought, there are existing alternatives to display advertising, for instance you could produce top-notch articles with affiliate offers. Manipulating with banner sizes might also work... No need to worry too much IMHO, a vacuum does not occur in nature.

I'm sure people with adblockers constantly on convert less in most verticals anyways so blocking them shouldn't hurt too much.

If you are in niche site business then simple contact advertisers directly and add their text ads to your site.
Most people running Adblock are unlikely to click on the ads and you should try to milk them more by using contextual aff links.
I not think adblock is already most popular extension on chrome.

But, as others say that google will pay the owner i not see any chance of it. Google owns chrome and can easily change adblock's source code within few seconds.

Off topic:Op, do you know how to make extensions for chrome ? (i got a great idea while researching about adblock)

then millions of clone extensions will popup to blackmail advertising networks.

Mah. If Google or some other big company gets angry at AdBlock, all they have to do is buy it.
But even then, that's not the real problem at the end.. someone else can create a new AdBlock and then here we go again..

I guess the Ads system will need a change in the near future.

this

those who are wise enough to use adblock won't click on your ads, so what you're referring to as 'lost revenue', it's not really lost, because it never was and never will be regardless adblock

Are ads even with it? Or is it just a lazy way to generate income without coming up with content to sell.

if they got angry, they'll simply block adblock and its clones in chrome, ff, ie and opera. Thats it, there's no point of buying

How could google block adblock in ff,ie and opera when they aren't run by google?
