[Journey] Building an authority site - Inspired by BassTrackerBoats

Used scrapebox today to get a list of related blog posts with comments available for my niche (5k URLs roughly).

randomised the list and going to post a few comments on relevant posts each day (manually) just to put the site out there a bit (no targeted anchors, just raw URLS etc).

Day 11: 19/11/2014

13 articles published so far. All between 350 - 1200 words (average around 500 words).
Got some adsense up on the site now.

Handful of visitors starting to tricky in now. Expecting more soon, but its still early days.

Good luck David, I have been following BTB's useful thread, and started my authority journey a few months ago. One thing I have done that BTB has not, is build up social accounts at the same time. 6K likes on FB and 4K followers on Twitter have built naturally with the build up of content, all helps with traffic. Anyway good luck.

Hey, natural 6K likes definitely sounds like your site is gaining some momentum, willing to share your overall traffic/promotion strategy for the site in a sentence or two? I think it would help a lot of people, me included.

Up to about 14 articles now - hitting 1000 words more often that not now thanks to the tip of setting out sub headings before starting the article - that helps.

One keyword is ranked around 135 - that came from nowhere after optimising the page as per BassTrackerBoats tutorial - have made a few more changes to that page today so will check ranking again in a few days.

Its still got me inspired after two weeks so thats good - starting another authority site to run along side it as well.

Will update again once I have some traffic coming in.

Don't want to keep giving out details of the same theme to everyone, also I am not an expert when it comes to Silo structure.
However, I am in the process of setting up another authority site, as I set the Silo structure up on that one, I may post a guide on how I done it.

I have set up SerpBuddy rank tracker today and added the primary keyword that I am targeting in each of those articles.
I have about 5 keywords that have a position now, but all fairly low (in the hundreds) at the moment.

Keyword Research process - refined
I am working on a refined keyword research process now, just to squeeze a little more out of each article and increase the chances of ranking it:

1.I take a keyword from my original list of keywords (This comprises of about 23,000 keywords all with at least 30 searches per month).

2.I put that keyword into http://keywordshitter.com and wait until I have around 2000 longtail variations.

3.I put those variations into google keyword planner - but first I split them into 2x1k lists (thats the max GKP will take at once) I then export the results from both and put them into one excel sheet, ordered by search volume.

4.Them for the manual part - I start going through that list, starting at the top and I put each keyword into a google search in Chrome. I look at the results for each, and with the help of SEOQuake Toolbar and Mozbar, I look at pagerank, DA/PA and generally the type of sites that are in the top ten.

That process gives me a nice keyword with some searches but not too much competition.

Writing the article

Once I have my target keyword, I do around 5-10 minutes research on the topic, build a list of headings, a few royalty free images and any links that I need then I begin writing the article.
Once I have finished I run a check with the Yoast SEO plugin - this will check keyword density, placement and readability of the content - I try to get this perfect as per the Yoast plugin.

Readability Score
This is quite an interesting factor that I noticed in Yoast, apparently its a well know metric to judge article readability - more info here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flesch?Kincaid_readability_tests#Flesch_Reading_Ease.
I don't know how much bearing that has on rankability, but I have decided to try and follow its principles.

Nice progress! But does it really matter if the images are royalty free or not?

^^ for a throw away site image source doesn't matter so much, but this site is a long term venture, I am hoping to build authority and trust. The last thing I want is to start getting called out for having other people's content on the site without their permission.

Yeah I understand. In my website thought I can't find such images so I just crop, resize and change the name of the images. I mean isn't it better to simply do that than having to pay for images or search on a small pool if them?
