Say TOMORROW you are in a room all alone with nothing more than a computer, desk, chair, phone and internet connection. On the outside of this room there is a line of business professionals that stretch as far as you could see. One by one they knock on the door to the room and ask you for help with their online goals. Their needs vary wildly, and they mostly don't actually know what they need. All they know about you is that you can do web programming, analytics, im and related internet stuff. You want to make residual income from every one of them but you cannot hire anyone to help you in the physical room. You can outsource work online but you have no connections built up. If you spend too much time on your computer you cannot answer the door, and the people will start to leave.

What do you do?

How far away is the nearest pub from this room? Walking distance or would I have to drive? Also is the computer in this room mine or not? If it was not mine and the pub was in walking distance, I would leave the room and walk to the pub.

Start charging them for blowjobs.

Or just hire somebody to stand outside the room, and charge everyone for my consultation that I give them regarding business. Easy as that. You said no help inside the room, but I can hire someone out there to collect the money off the business professionals.

To be frank, that is pretty accurate for most clients in the IM industry. A good professional in our industry has to be able to offer direction and be willing to do that as part of the service they are providing most of the time.

Lol, thats really the sort of replies you would get. As its a hypothetical situation, it doesn't warrant a practical response.

Well, you can't have it all. Profit from the clients you can profit from and leave the rest (tell them you have too much work on your hands).

Having read your "hypothetical" situation, its a beautiful one to be in, but a difficult one to get out of.

So you are trying to create value for all your clients, but at the same time you have to build up a virtual team, services, financial stability etc.

- First of all, we need to get rid of some of the people waiting in the queue, so lets create a sheet called "dream sheet" only that we cannot call it that, so lets call it "Business Goals".
Get the first 10 business people into your office one by one and explain, that in order for you to create a viable roadmap for them, you need to know their goals and aspirations, so you give them their "Business Goals" sheet and send them away with a booking for next week.

Now time to build a team, hire 3 virtual staff and get them to create a list of qualified IM staff and tell them to interview each one and give you a breakdown of the top 10 each of them finds.

- While they do that, see the next 10 business people and do the same as in the first step.

Look at the list of 30 staff you should now have, build a team of 10 good reliable seeming staff, bin 10 and keep 10 for future use.

Depending on what it is you are offering, get your staff to make samples to show to the 10 business people that come back from creating their Business Goal list, tell them that you think this is what they need to achieve their goals.

Make money, grow, hire more staff.... etc...

I would speak to a number of SEO providers who can prove they use good SEO techniques and have a solid understanding of the future of SEO.

I would then negotiate a deal with each SEO provider and act as a lead generator.

From there, I would interview each client, close the deal then outsource the projects to different SEO agencies.
