Quick question about long-tail keywords and the effect it has on Google rankings

Hi all, quick question for you all. I have a few authority blog sites which have content like:

"10 cat toys for people in Los Angeles"

My question is, when you do long tail keywords in your SEO work, do you use LOTS of long tail keywords, or only a few. For example, if I were to have a article published that was related to this content, I would use the following long tail keywords:

"cat toys people in LA, LA cat people toys, toys of cats in LA"


And that's about it. Should I try to use ALL combinations of words and variations? How many long tail keywords do you usually use per article you publish? Is there a downside to using TONS of long tail keyword sets? (Like 100+ different variations of keywords based on the article)

Just trying to get my feet wet with authority sites, sorry if this is a dumb question.

Yes, group similar keywords together and write one article for them. So with your example above "cat toys people in LA, LA Cat people toys, toys of cats in LA" would all be in one article.

Then you could write another article that covers "clothing" for instance, and that would contain a bunch of related clothing long tail KWs, "cat clothing people in LA, LA Cat people clothing, clothing of cats in LA."

Regarding the number of long tail keywords you can include, I would say just make it read naturally. Don't throw extra long tails into the article if they interrupt the user experience. But if it is a long article, and it reads naturally, then you can include more.

You should create categories and sub categories depending on the overall theme of your site.

The sub categories would depend on whether your site is trying to rank locally, or for the keyword.
