Photoshop or Gimp?

It depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If it's just simple graphic editing, GIMP works. But for complicated stuffs nothing beats Photoshop, but again it still depends others prefer to use other software than Photoshop.

I've used Photoshop and Gimp, but I prefer Photoshop since I do a lot of Photo retouching and photo restoration. However, if you only need to add text to images or do very light work, then use Gimp.

All depends on user skill/experience/talent you can go with one ore either doesn't matter go with one you most prefer

Yeah it still depends on the user, others create some amazing stuff using GIMP but when I it comes to photo editing I think it's still photoshop but again it depends on the user

Been using both, and I definitively prefer photoshop. Gimp is good too, but the final product in Photoshop just ends up looking a lot more professional most of the time.

Check out adobe illustrator too, its good for logos since its vector based

Photoshop is worth the money. You can do alot with photoshop, no doubt.

I worked with gimp in college and it's actually pretty decent tool for a free program. You should install it and try to use it for a week and then decide.

I would suggest trying out Gimp to see if it does what you need to do. What do you have to lose? If you want "everything" Photoshop is there but Gimp may well suffice depending on your needs.

if you have the money and the skill, photoshop it is. all my designers friends have photoshop but havent heard of Gimp, might as well check it out though.

GIMP is a little gimped for me. After Photoshop I find I struggle to work as efficiently with it.
In terms of cost you can get the Adobe Creative Cloud subscription now and just pay the monthly fee.
If your a student or can somehow get a student to purchase it for you it ends up being quite cheap.

For work Photoshop and Illustrator have no alternatives for me.
There are other programs that I sometimes use to open up files when using other computers.
On my own rigs Adobe stuff is top notch.

Cant top photoshop once you get used to it. If you got the money go for it. If you are just testing the water to see if you are into these programs, definitely use GIMP first since its free. GIMP isn't bad but lacks all the refinement you will find in Photoshop.

The moment there is a software that does 50% of what Photoshop does, I'm going to switch.

Adobe's software is overbloated and slow (they should adopt that slogan), but it does the job well.

There's plenty of feedback on qualities etc so I won't go into that.

From a commercial perspective, in principle I hate the strangle hold companies like Adobe and Microsoft have placed on the marketplace. They purposely introduce compatibility issues and then place a price on compatibility.

Apple tried to encourage a backlash against Adobe (I'm not really an Apple fan either) by not supporting Adobe distributions, as standard, I advocate open source, but trying to convince people away from what they know has been the commercial black magic that these companies have created.

One thing worth noting is that I'm as artistic as a council paving slab, so it's an easy choice for me. But might not be that straight forward for you.

Gimp is for people too broke to get photoshop or not smart enough to find photoshop another way.

Photoshop for me is by far the best one out there. But for simple but good looking web graphic creation, you can use tools like canva etc. It's an online tool, and really very simple to use. It has its own limitations though.
