Sometimes the likes are for SEO purposes
No, the likes just temporarily make us feel like we're loved.
There are actually some tools, such as the Moz Toolbar and Alexa, which use Facebook likes and other social signals to determine a website's popularity, worth, and potential. Not only that, the likes also make the Facebook page appear genuine when they are properly combined with shares and comments.
I find FB marketing good only for traffic and sells not really helped me with search engine ranking so far at my humble experience..
Google (Matt Cutts blog) has made it very clearly Google doesn't use social signal for ranking web pages even though there's a correlation between good ranking and popularity on social media.
In some cases, yes! Although those "cosmetic social signals" can often translate into real money if you do it right. So it's for cosmetic reason.
That statement contradicts itself. My conclusion.... It's anyone's guess

Yes, social media metrics are very important.
+ Everytime someone likes and shares an article in a legit manner, it creates a backlink in facebook and a lot of them can be found in google. Though it's all from one source, that's a lot of backlink juice right there.
That's not entirely true as this depends on what type of business you are running. A B2B company is more likely to be popular on Google+ and Linkedin while a B2C company is more likely to be popular on Facebook.I see what you're saying. Obviously something that is popular on one media channel is more likely to be popular on another. I don't think that automatically means a direct correlation though. I would also not discard the idea. Perhaps it has more to do with how the likes are gained and how they are used once obtained.
