It's little tough to get inside but not impossible... If you can create one good site based on their guidelines then you can also try...
Its hard to get in now but its not a traffic gold mine anymore. Ive been looking on how to rank in google news, My old news site has been in for years and before Id get so much traffic, now I get few maybe 10 to 20 visits a day even after I publish a new article.
Before if you covered a niche you would out rank ny times or other big news orgs, for example if you covered Tennis your website was dedicated to Tennis, if you posted the news on Tennis events first you would get ranked first over new york times because you specialized in Tennis, not anymore with the algo changes and the made for adsense spammers Google made it harder to even rank in google news, now they only give the big news websites like the Times and huff po top spot even though they dont specialize in Tennis they run a story on Tennis thats hot they will get the top spot over you.
Smaller sites will no longer rank. Someone told me in order to Rank in google news you need to write fresh content daily, at least 4 or 5 articles, Id try that but the downside is what if I spend 5 hours a day writing articles and then not getting any adsense revenue" thats wasted time and you still dont get ranked, thats the painful part.
Making money is the main goal of very website, if you are earning then you get more motivated, but its hard to earn from ads now since almost everyone has an adblocker by default in their browsers now. Even some big news websites were complaining about this and put a disclaimer note when people visit saying please remove your ad blocker because this is how we earn our money, so even they are losing money from adsense due to the ad blocker.
Right now YouTube is the only place left where you can still have a shot at making money and getting traffic, I know some guys on the youtube forum they are not Famous at all but they just recycle hot news and speak on it for 10 minutes or do a reaction video and said they earn 75 thousand a year from adsense and they dont even have that many subscribers, but their videos get like 50 to 100k views each and they put up new videos daily.
