local SEO for different cities

how can I do local SEO for different cities efficiently? Lets say I had a car dealership business with three independent locations in cities A, B, C. However, one company website.

I know that NAP consistency is very important for local SEO.

Is it enough to have different addresses and phone numbers for each city? Anything else which is important for this?

If you had one domain, set up subpage URLs for each location.

That is basically how franchises do it.

Just create your URL structure so you have 3 sections - 1 for each city, and then separate pages under each of those sub sections with information specific to that City.

I did some research and found that competitors did it like this. However, they were kicked out of places in all cities except for their "main" city. They still rank fine organically for the other cities as well but they all lost their other maps listings.

Any clue what they might have made wrong?

In my experience Google typically associates a site with ONE local more than any other no matter what you do. There always seems to be one city that it just ranks much easier than the others. Master that city's rankings first then expand the rest slowly.

The one thing no one seems to have mentioned is the overall copy on each page. If you don't restructure the sentences then Google will penalise you for duplicate content and will ignore the pages when indexing

Nothing went wrong.

Google is only going to give you one maps listing in your home city, unless you game them.

If you get addresses in those other cities, you can rank in the maps box there.
