assuming you are linking a finite number (12, in this example) of blogs to your money site, is the second configuration here better than the first?

FIRST:

blog1 --> moneysite
blog2 --> moneysite
blog3 --> moneysite
blog4 --> moneysite
blog5 --> moneysite
blog6 --> moneysite
blog7 --> moneysite
blog8 --> moneysite
blog9 --> moneysite
blog10 --> moneysite
blog11 --> moneysite
blog12 --> moneysite

SECOND

blog2 \
blog3 -> blog1 -->moneysite
blog4 /

blog6 \
blog7 -> blog5 --> moneysite
blog8 /

blog10 \
blog11 -> blog9 --> moneysite
blog12 /

Seems like the 2nd way would give more link juice, but the first way has more direct links. Which is more important for SEO?

Also, i'm assuming that in the second example, it's best if the lowest level blogs don't directly link to the money site, but only link to the blog that links to the money site.

If you follow method 2, it will allow you to "clean up" your links a bit before sending them on to your money site. Link laundering if you want to think of it in those terms. Although it really depends on how good your blogs are. If they are just random junk you're throwing up, then I'd say go with method 2 for sure just so you don't accidently drag your money site down. BUT, if you can keep the blogs decent then by all means go with method 1.

#1 will also be better with quality blogs as it will help keep it around. The longer you can keep it going, the more use you can get out of it. Sending juice to new sites, you'll have more links, etc. And here is your linkwheel info:

thanks for the linkwheel link.

It seems that that is designed for web 2.0 sites. Would the same concept still apply for free blog sites? Or would it be better to do it one of the ways I illustrated in this thread?

Who said you cant do both, you have to mix it up a little. Google loves it!
