Does Ancor Text Diversity Improve Rankings?

Personally they have not really made too much of a difference to any of the sites I have tried to rank.

Sure, is the best thing you can do. Makes your backlink profile lawful and natural, almost as if it were spontaneous.
Try to use only one anchor text for the entire site structure and say what happens (if you do it with for example 1000 same anchor texts for only one keyword, your site will be immediately branded as spam).

Often you have also to use anchor text without the exact match of your keywords. In fact Google is able to recognize the relevance semantics.

If you've been building spam links to your site, or your backlink profile consists of too many web 2.0 links, or your content isn't up to scratch then you most likely won't see any difference.

But if you've passed all the tests i mentioned, and you're JUST trying to sort out your site's anchor text diversity with good clean non spam links from non spam sources, on top of other non spammed links that your site already has, on top of good quality lenghty, and well structured articles.. then the chances are that since you've already said that they "have not really made too much of a difference to any of the sites I have tried to rank", that your site's anchor text density was at some stage not as it should have been.. in which case you'll have to wait for a penguin refresh for your rankings to improve since you've most likely already been penalized for having too much exact match anchor text.

It only makes your link profile look natural and shields your site from penguin-related penalties. However, if your site is over-optimised and the over-optimisation is preventing your site from moving up the rankings, diversifying your anchors could help it rank higher.

Diversification helps avoid penalties and makes your profile look natural. It does not per se increase rankings.

Anchor text diversification don't make better your rankings, that's obvious.
But in this case you're advantaged on the long run and when a new algorithm update comes your site responds better instead of a backlink profile with all the same anchor text.

Don't know where you're getting this info from, since you most definitely need anchor text diversity, even with high quality links only - unless that is you're working on ranking a parasite page which can obviously take a lot more abuse. And trust me, im speaking from experience.

Anchor text diversity has to be there. Yes, sometimes you can get a feeling that its not helping you in ranking but it would help you a lot in terms of "not getting your site penalized".

You might be penalized by the exact anchor links where as there are less changed for being penalized if you choose a verity of anchor texts in your profile. so dont ignore it.

main keyword: record labels

anchor text used:
indie record labels
major record labels
Atlanta record labels
Miami music labels
New York music companies
small record companies
Rock music label


All different highly related anchors and google knows it

Real life example, ranked top 3 and top 5 for some of those terms without the specific text ever appearing on the page. In fact ranked 1 page for a bunch of terms like above, some terms were on the page some were not.

Nope.. it is used to keep the profile natural. Diversification of anchor text plays a major role in building backlinks for a website.

Anchor text is must to overcome the problems of penalties though it does not work in ranking.. But obviously don't go for much anchor text as said by arganrecords, your site will branded as spam..

It does improve your rankings. Always go for anchor text diversity.

Anchor text diversity improves your rankings, but that does not mean that if you spam your site with let's say 500 backlinks all with different anchor texts, then it will have a negative effect, diversifying your anchor link texts helps when you are building carefully (using a pyramid backlinking method or doing not too many backlinks per day), so that you do not get any penalties from Google.

diversification of anchor text will help you out, I myself find best to do wide match, like for ex. anchor is football, diversification would be: great football, best football, european football etc
