buy services. IMO the learning curve and wasted time is very steep to go it alone for a new site. Another suggestion - go slow with the link building and go with someone who knows his stuff. If it's a crash and burn site, no problem just dump links on it, get ranked and get burnt. But if its a money site for long term - take it slow!

the health niche...though one be ready to spend some serious $$$ or days creating high quality content as tier1 and 2 if you want to rank. unless you target some really long tail KWs . As KingSEO said - start with social media - FB, Twitter, Reddit, Tumblr etc mix it with high PR web 2.0s and if you have the funds - buy some backlinks. The hardest part in SEO - the waiting, so keep yourself busy with other projects while the site starts to rank.

Search for a good websites in your field which changed their brand name or redirected to new URL ( search a url or brand that had authority)

2) Check the backlinks of the old brand name or old url
3) As your site is in the same niche as the old site, make it more interesting than the old one with content and design
4) Contact the owners of backlinking websites with a well written email
5) In the email try to be genuine about the process you have done and try to explain them about their site linking to empty url which is not good
6) In the end tell them about your site which has better information and request them to give you a backlink in the place of old useless link
7) Since most of the sites with good authority got links naturally, these people will give you links thinking that your site link would be helpful for the people visiting their websites

Yes, this is the pratic thing, I've only showed the overview of the method. So broken link building it's the best natural link building method and I've received a lot of backlinks from quality over quality (sometimes PR7 with trust rank!)
