From what I understand an SEO's job is part smarts, part resources and part tools. For the "part tools" what are the ideal tools and subscriptions to use? From link building, to back-link reporting, to rank tracking and everything else, what would be your ideal combination of SEO tools?

Nothing is ideal in this universe. How would you expect any SEO setup to be ideal. You gotta read some tuts on SEO and conduct experiment to see the combination that works for you. It's all about trail and error, mate!
I'm definitely aware there's quite a bit of trial and error involved with this line of work, but there are definitely some clear cut industry tools that excel beyond others. For instance, when it comes to backlink reporting there's the big 4 that I can think of: Majestic SEO, aHrefs, Opensite Explorer, and SEO Spyglass. Of those 4, each has their pluses and minus's, but for most people there is an objective "winner" that they prefer.
As a newish SEOer (really just learning this for my business) I'm trying to figure out what tools are worth investing in. The goal is to avoid spending money during a "trial and error" period from some more experienced folks on this site that have keen suggestions.

I can't tell you what is ideal but I can recommend the best tools to you.
Link Building: GSA SER, a link indexer (I use One Hour Indexing), proxies, etc. You can also buy a PBN subscription in the marketplace.
Backlink Reporting: Ahrefs and Open Site Explorer. I rarely use Majestic SEO.

When it comes to SEO, there exists no fixed formula that is going to work successfully for all people. People who engage in SEO will really need to find their own combination of strategies - one that works best for all their needs, especially for the niche that they will be pursuing.

in the beginning I suggest you say away from any kind of link building tools. First try to do SEO by hand , then when you see some changes ,you can automate the process with the help of software. Still I would suggest :- Moz trial , Seo Powersuite & keep reading the forums.
I agree here. Though I have found one fail-safe is including YouTube vids... at the very minimum your initial site setup should include 3 YT vids.. they tend to help with indexing as well when you produce your video sitemap.

You need or must have these automated tools :
1. GSA for tier1 n 2 n 3 links
2. GSA captcha breaker to break captcha
3. Semi pvt proxies from buyproxies
4. Word ai for super spinning
5. Onehour for indexing
Most importantly hire a local content writer
You can add more specific softwares for wikis, sbm etc if u need the job done quick on specific platforms

None of which is useful for local seo.
Thanks for the replies in here guys, for those who are just writing "all websites are different" or "there's no ideal set up" I'm aware that this industry is subjective in some regards. As a web designer and developer, I get that there are many ways to "skin a cat" so to speak.
