USA education is horrible

I am a 16 year old sophomore in high school and it is a complete waste of time. Everything we learn is obsolete except one of my classes which is a game development class, and I could probably learn it online. It is blatantly obvious to me that it is just to mass produce a ton of corporate slaves to make the big wigs more money. And people wonder why the wealth distribution is ridiculously awful. Modern education discourages independent thought and things like entrepreneurship. Also the colleges are super overpriced while some other nations have free colleges and some even pay you to go! The debt from college is so crippling you are basically an indentured servant.
Sorry about the rambling but all this bs is pissing me off.

You are waking up. Thats good and also bad, you will be encountering many other logic's that were there and noone sees. Just don't worry too much, act for yourself and whoever is around you. Try to do something great for society. Governments are not yet very organized and they are just worried on keeping the dollar floating.
Do something for yourself. Learn to code, also learn microcontrollers with arduino. Make yourself a tinkerer. You will love life and you will eventually do something great for humanity and very fun also.

If you have the chance to take college-level courses your junior and senior year...the one I had actually touched on all of those topics, I would recommend you take them. Mine debated if the requirement of a college education for a high paying job was just a way to delay kids from flooding the work force and keeping them under their parents care...and so on and on. If there is a class like that where you don't feel so brainwashed, you'll enjoy it.

But I don't agree about highschool or ANY form of education being a "waste of time". My mother taught for 38 years and it's such a cliche thing for a 16 year old to say what you're saying.

Please tell us what you'd rather do instead of highschool? Would you rather drop out and go work at McDonalds? Would you rather take gaming classes all day and not learn shit about history, math, science, english, etc? All the things that make a person a well rounded, respected & intelligent individual?

The problem with the education system is the notion that no one should be "left behind". Standards are systematically dropped so inner-city kids with a lower quality of education, can still move on at the same rate as kids in better funded schools. If you read a ninth grade text book from 30 years ago and compare it with a ninth grade text book today, the older book will look like a college book in comparison.

School is far from being a waste of time but it's not necessarily great for someone who is intelligent, driven, and has a plan.

For me it was 4 years of low expense living to figure out what to do with my life while being able to say "I'm a student" instead of "I'm unemployed". I took an indefinite leave of absence from my college after realizing any job I would get with my degree would be a fraction of what my business was currently doing so it only made sense to move on. In retrospect, it was one of the best decisions I've ever made for. Like quitting a job to start your own business.

I do agree with you that many schools do train people for the workforce by teaching them what to think instead of how to think. How to survive instead of how to thrive. Most things in life are unfortunately tuned to be compatible with the broad spectrum and the lowest common denominator, but ultimately, it's what you make of it all. If you think (and know) of a better route to take than what school has to offer, go for it. But if you're going to drop out just because other people did and now they're successful, think again.

you are going to need to do some seeking yourself if you want to go deeper. i was pissed when i learned about plato, aristotle, neitzche the works of the great eastern philosophers, lao tzu, confucious, etc. none of that was taught at my school. it was all new information to me after i graduated. the best thing you can do is go to the classics section and just start reading.

its not taught in schools because the average person can't keep up or even hope to follow a long chain of logic.

i guess you need to figure out what your priorities are and go from there. much like a public restroom, the public education system isn't always the best

I respect your opinion and I think that there are some things that are useful that we learn. Math is useful to a certain point, and I am very interested in physics. But honestly I could just forget about 3/4ths of what I learn and be absolutely fine. Though I think you have a semi valid point, I am annoyed you mentioned McDonalds. We are on an IM forum, how do you think I plan on making money? I develop flash games, apps, and websites and I already am making more than pretty much all of my peers and I probably spend 1/10th of the time they spend at a job.

If you don't go to uni the only connection you have is you and you school friends who are probably retarded and work for the minimum wage just like their parents. Two of my children were 14 when they were sophomores in high school. They started kindergarten at four. Another one of mine who started at five was a 15 year old sophomore. Did you repeat a grade or did you start late? Maybe the classes you have are too easy. Talk to your guidance counselor. Take more challenging classes. You're allowed to pick some. US education is not horrible. You are just being a whiny teenager. We all were at that age and didn't like everything we had to do. I didn't like dissecting a rat in biology, nor have I found that useful in later years, but I did what I was told so I could get a good grade and move on. Life isn't all fun and games.

You can be anything you want to be. No one is trying to mass produce you to be a corporate slave. You're in the US. No one cares what you become, as long as you are a productive member of society.

I was active in the education of my children and never got that impression. Take some personal responsibility. If you want to be an entrepreneur, take classes that reflect that. High school is full of electives that are geared towards the interests of students. I have never seen a school that did not offer business classes. Take some of those. You'll need them if you want your own business.

Then tell your parents to homeschool you. Or join the football team and get rid of some of that angsty teen-ness. You're lucky you're not my kid. I'd throw you out the door and tell you to go get some fresh air, and come back when you were feeling pleasant again. You're never going to get this time back in your life. Go out with your friends and have some fun. Kids your age should not be complaining in an online forum. They should be out with their friends and enjoying their youth.

Don't let anyone tell you that your opinions are worth less just because you're 16. I agree with you about the school system. It's wrong to think that a 16 year old man wants to sit in a classroom and be taught in a group of 20+ other people. The education system is designed to get people through and doesn't accomplish nearly as much as it could. Having said that, just because high school has it's limitations doesn't mean you have limitations. Go to school, learn the shit they want you too and learn the stuff you want to on the side. I think the main point that I am trying to get across here is, don't confirm to norms just because they are there... always question them and try to improve upon them.
