I actually learned this from doing PPC, but it applies equally well to YouTube traffic.
If you've worked much with Google's Content Network, you start to realize that if you want serious, cheap traffic, you don't target specific keywords, so much as words that would trigger websites that cater to your desired audience.
For example: rather than trying to target "weightloss", which will be expensive as f*ck and probably won't be profitable, you can use celebrities who are popular with people who also want to lose weight. The big "O" would be an obvious choice here. Done right, this can get you a buttload of cheap traffic.
So, back to YouTube, people make the same mistake when trying to promote affiliate products. They upload some boring-ass slideshows about acai berry and wonder why they're not getting any traffic. Hint: YouTube is about entertainment. Unless your acai commercial is hella funny or shocking or something, people will hit the back button before they see the second slide.
Instead, stop thinking linear and start thinking lateral. Build channels devoted to something your demographic actually wants to see, rather than about the product itself. Celebrity fan channels, for example, tend to be very popular and they attract the same kinds of people as the high-traffic webpages that will give you most of your PPC traffic in the Content Network. If you were to build an Oprah fan channel and catalog a bunch of her greatest hits, you'll start to build up a loyal subscriber list and your traffic will snowball. To get them to your LP, just put your URL in the description with an annotation saying something like "Check it: Oprah's New Diet just lost me 65 Lbs! Click Here to Read How I Did it --->>>".
Also, it doesn't have to be celebrities. If you want to target a male demographic for your penis enhancement offers or whatever, put together a collection of Mixed Martial Arts videos, or football, or fishing or something that will draw that audience. Cute animals and babies are huge traffic magnets and can probably be monetized with email submits or IQ tests. And we all know hot music videos can work for ringtones, if you can get them to stick.
As a side note, if you want instant targeted traffic, find someone who's got a fan channel with a ton of views and subscribers and offer to buy it. Done right, this can get you serious traffic for cheap. Many YT'ers have no idea how valuable their traffic is.
Okay, now to make that traffic convert, you can't just send it straight to the LP. It won't work very well, because this audience is still in entertainment mode. But I hit upon a way that does work VERY well. It drastically reduces the number of people who actually see the offer, but once they do, you can convert 1 in 10 (or sometimes better if you are really good) for high paying CPL's that require a credit card or even Clickbank products.
Essentially you need to set up a 3-step landing page presell. You can see the ultimate example here:
The first page is short and sweet. Grabs the curiosity of the browser and forces them to take a small action (give their email) to see more. On some of my LP's using this method, I tried removing the email optin to get more clickthroughs to the Offer. Instead, my earnings went into the toilet. This has been said many times, but it's really true. Getting the people to make a small commitment will put them in a state of mind more likely to convert to a sale down the line. Free trial offers, it turns out, are tailor made to this approach. Another side effect of having the opt-in is that you can build your own, highly-targeted email list to promote to later. It's worth it to go ahead and fill in your email, so you can see his marketing process the whole way through. I actually save all the emails I get from D@vid De@ngelo at [email protected] so I can modify them and use them for my own lists.
Once they opt-in, you send them to page 2, which actually delivers some really useful information that they want to learn. You have to make it good. This builds trust and makes them more likely to go to page 3. On page 3, you lay out why your product will solve their problem. I like to make Top 10 Lists. Like "The Top 10 Reasons You Will Never Be the Same After Trying X"....If it's a free trial offer, I count down from 10 and make Reason #1: "You Can Try Before You Buy!" I really make a big deal about the "No Risk" factor of being able to see how well something works for you before you commit. Then, I send them to the offer page and tell them specifically the steps they need to take: "1: Fill in your name and address. 2: Pay $4.95 for S&H. 3: Receive your FREE month's supply of X!" If they've made it this far in your process, nearly 100% will be curious enough to at least look at the offer.
Following these steps, I typically get about 15 - 20 people to see the offer out of 100, and 1 out of 7 will actually sign up for the free trial! This was with a guarana offer at Copeac with a $28 payout. I was making $4 EPC. Now, I'm recruiting for a new network AdFinity, whose payouts are the highest I've seen. $38 for Guarana. $43 for Acai. etc... If anybody wants to join and actually get approved, PM me and I'll get you set up.
Sorry such a long post, lol. Hope people really read it and take action, because it works!
