Nub question about keyword (competition) research

Okay so I am finally taking action with amazon..My plan is to build one or multiple authority site/s and monetize them with Amazon.
I've done my readings and took the first step..bought Long Tail Platinum and currently doing keyword research.
The question is: When analyzing the top 10 competitors there are always sites like Amazon, Walmart, etc ranking in the first spots. How should I look at these sites? As huge competitors that I won't be able to outrank or easy to outrank sites with some on page and off page SEO?

I'm not an SEO expert, but from what I've heard, big sites like this won't be targeting your long tail keyword specifically so they should be easy to out-rank. In-fact, if it is listing sites like walmart when you search for your long tail KW, that probably means there isn't any real competition out there.

This. But to be on the safe side it's best to check their metrics, it could always turn out to be a very popular page.
First go to keywordrevealer.com, load up your KW; and check the competition's PA. Pages with a very high DA (>90) but a PA around 0-5 usually rank solely on the domain's authority and will be easy to outrank.

Ditto. It's near impossible to outrank these sites for the main keywords, but as Swordude said, these sites won't usually be optimized for long tails so this is what you should be focusing on.
