Cats are carriers of a mind controlling parasitic disease called Toxoplasmosis.
When rats get infected with the parasite, they lose their fear of cats and are actively attracted to them.

Teh Internets say that Toxoplasmosis is carried by almost any warm blooded animal, including dogs, sheep (be careful, Welsh), etc - not just cats. That said, there's no point to stop liking them

Yes that's correct.
But it can only complete its lifecycle inside a cat.
So the parasite results in an affinity for cats.

I KNOW FOR A FACT my brother has this parasite. Because me and my bro were both attacked by our cousins cat who we use to call "OJ" (he was an orange cat who randomly attacked everyone who ever tried to pet him). I even remember 1 day when my brother got clawed, he grabbed the little fucker, ran up a flight of stairs, stood at the top with the cat between his hands and threatened to launch his ass down. I vividly remember saying "bro, you can NOT kill tommy's cat" (tommy was our cousin and lived 2 houses down at the time).
So he hated cats for most of his life.
That is right up until he went away to college, his roommate had a cat.... and out of nowhere his cat claw PTSD VANISHED. A couple years later he wound up getting a cat of his own.
I even remember asking him a dozen times, "dude, you almost killed a cat and now you own one? WHAT. THE. FUCK!"
But now it all makes sense. He most likely got infected by his roommates cat.
