Question about domains

I was thinking of doing a niche site and have been doing tons of reading here and elsewhere to get a better understanding of how these sites succeed. From what i understand the success comes from very specific keywords that relate to your niche. When it comes to seo would a domain name even matter in this situation?

For example lets say my niche was bicycles but my domain name was useddvds this is a pretty extreme example but would this conflict in domain to niche have a effect on seo?

My understanding is that niche sites rely on keywords so people are not finding your site by typing your domain but instead would find it by typing "bikes for sole" is this right?

I do understand in some cases a domain name can be important for a website that wants reoccurring traffic like a social network but because we are dealing with niche related content it should not really matter right?

Your keywords should be less competitive yet profitable. People still type domain names into browsers and this is called direct traffic. Search engine traffic (people who finds you from the results) is sweet, but returning (direct) traffic means your website is important to visitors. So, think well before selecting your domain name. It must be relevant and easy to remember at first.

How would i determine if a keyword is competitive? Im using adwords keyword planner if the cost per day is high would that mean its a competitive keyword?

Also i should have been more specific but my website will offer reviews and other topics with amazon affiliate links. I don't really plan on selling anything and while im sure a small percentage of people "might" come back to read other reviews for other products i talk about most will just go straight to amazon for whatever else they want. My whole thing here is that i have a niche i think will be very profitable but a domain related to the niche is hard to come by that's why im asking about the relevance of the domain.

Although domains have little impact in succeeding in your niche it is also important that you relate it to what you are trying to sell, we would want users to take one look at any part of your site and say, "this is what i am looking for". as for keywords I suggest you do some research before choosing them, use Google keyword planner and check its competition level and its level of traffic. you would to have low competition keywords with high level of traffic but based on my experience if you are targeting a specific location you would not get good results like the criteria a said earlier, if you are targeting specific location and having a hard time choosing keywords that have high traffic related to your niche, you should choose the ones closest to your niche and are present on your website, and off course let it be handled by seo professionals. You can determine if your keyword is competitive by searching for it on Google and looking at the top 10 results in Google to find out if they are actively trying to rank for the keyword. A good rule of thumb to follow is this: the higher the number of monthly searches, the higher the competition.
