Todays headlines in all indian local channels is "I don't know who is Sachin Tendulkar": Sharapova.

But who is this bitch sharapova?

Unless you follow the sport, you likely won't know any names of top players.
 
Well Sharapova is a Russian Tennis Player and Russia is a country where cricket is not played and assuming that she doesn't follow cricket either its not a big deal at all if she does not know Sachin at all. Its just like you not knowing who Sharapova is.
 
I just went to twitter and searched for sharapova. simple tweet that shows situation of her social accounts

"india seems to be gathered all its collective stupidity magnified it and then unleashed onto sharapova's twitter and fb".
She got outstanding publicity in india. she'll get bollywood offer soon
 
imHo, there was no need to open this thread. Actually she is more famous, worldwide, than Sachin Tendulkar. I'm also an Indian but I also know that cricket is played in only about 10~15 countries at the most, and Sachin, though is one of the greatest in Cricket, he cannot be as famous in countries like Russia, China, Japan, etc. where they don't even play lowest form of cricket. Hence she is right and not insulting our people or Sachin when she says she doesn't know who Sachin is...

Btw, I like Sachin as much as you do, and I also read about Maria Sharapova's comment this mornig, but it didn't hurt my pride any wrong way! ;)

Also we too don't know about Ice-hockey, or canoeing, American football, baseball, etc. where there could be bigger god-like players existing. Our own Sachin can say the same thing like Maria did if he too is asked about who Wayne Gretzky is, or who Barry Bonds is... so should their countrymen also feel insulted by Sachin's innocent answer, the same way some of our own contrymen feel "insulted" when some great player says she doesn't know Sachin Tendulkar?

@srb888 more famous than sachin? Really? OBAMA says when sachin is batting productivity of AMERICA drops by 5% i don't think productivity of any country drops 0.5% while she's playing tennis.

Who is Obama? lol And that 5% he is talking about is US NRIs and the people staying there from the Subcontinent -- their share of US markets goes to sleep probably when Sachin is flowing in full form.


And I said "worldwide"... don't go by the population of one country, India, alone... that way, population wise, everything about us will be more famous than anything else in world. Even one Mr Akhilesh Yadav will be more "popular" than Boris Becker or Mark Spitz if you go by population count alone.

Also, our own national productivity index (what's that!? lol) goes to sub zero region and stays there for too long, even when a third class ODI is played in our country... is that ideal and justifiable because we are only Indian hero worshippers?

Aren't "we" too egoists/ego-hurting-types when such simple comments are made by other world class players? Why can't we just smile at it and let go of the "hurt"? lol

It's more than Sachin who'd go defensive and extra-offensive when a simple comment like that is made... first ask him is that statement important to him? Ofc, he will say "no"... but we, most of people of India, have no other important thing to do for days then, other than talk rubbish about it, as if some tennis player has began a war on us:), it seems. Sorry about that, but it's a huge fact! Smile and let go, man!

LOL then how will you measure popularity? sachin is more popular in every cricket playing country than local players. but is she famous in every tennis playing country than local players?
