I have a site in the financial niche. Was ranking pretty well pre-penguin. Then the arctic animal came along and crapped on my rankings. As far as I can tell, it's not a manual penalty, it's an algorithm thing.
Most of the backlinks were made with anchor text. I can change a lot of those if I want into "URL"/"click here" and other generic terms to make the profile less spammy.
My question; will this help in the rankings?
My line of thinking is that when I change the backlinks, not building any new ones but just changing anchor text of the current ones, the algo won't trip over the anchor text problem and things will get back to the way they used to be.
Or am I completely naive, insane, or just off the mark?
