Idea for shitlist moderators

With this system, it opens up far more issues.
Eg, what happens if a moderator is hacked and someone drains their entire escrow account? How do we know the moderators are being impartial if there is potential for monetary gain if they rule against the supplier? What do we do if the moderator comes to the wrong conclusion, refunds the accuser themselves from the escrow account then new information comes to light - they can't force the accuser to pay it back?

Exactly . . . That is generally what I meant when I mentioned above that it "opens up a can of worms"

I guess once the dispute has been solved the accuser won't mind sharing a bit with MOD

Similar ideas have been suggested before OP but they are just too impractical for a forum like this.

Much better if people followed the rules, didn't deal with members with very low post counts/new, didn't deal with people through random PM's, didn't fall for the "too good to be true" threads and used their common sense and judgement.

I've personally bought a couple of services from the marketplace, I would never deal with someone in a financial capacity via a random PM, I always read through the sales threads 2-3 times even if it is 47 pages long so I have a complete understanding of what I am buying and who I am dealing with.

There will never be a perfect solution and there will always be scammers, there will also always be a guy with all the best intentions but something happens to them personally which prevents the service being delivered in the normal timely fashion and there will always be the buyer who is never satisfied no matter what they receive in return for a $5 investment.

I'd be all for a solution similar to this if it were practical but even then it would not prevent a hardcore scammer from ripping some guys off.

I think the Shitlist is running as good as it can be and the MOD's in that section couldn't do more than what they're doing, i hear what you suggest and agree something like this would work to a certain extent but i agree with WizGizmo it would also create other problems.

I think to help with the Shitlist we need to focus on the issues with the marketplace section, i have been working on ideas that may improve the safety of purchases taking place and the security of the sellers. The idea is being discussed now but there is a lot to finalise before i can discuss freely.

It's very simple...

1. Weed out the crap being sold...go back to a much harder approval process (even a higher thread price - I've suggested it before - $30 is peanuts)

2. Buyers....use your brain. Stay away from "Buy this $50 autoblog and it will make you $500 a month....GUARANTEED" threads...quite simple.

Think of it this way....if you were grocery shopping and saw a product that said "Eat this and you will become better looking instantly and bang 3 chicks tonight" woudl you buy it? No. Use that same real world logic in the market place.

Sure, there will always be bad apples...people that flake out...people that take advantage...but that happens. Common sense would eliminate 95% of the SL

Credibility is EVERYTHING when you are a mod on BHW, and we would
not want to be involved in something that might cause any doubts or
suspicion in regards to our credibilty.

Escrows can only be 100% effective if your trading with cash, or something that cannot do a chargeback. Or else the escrow has a big liability on its hands.

Scammer --> Deposits money to escrow --> sends money to victim

Chargeback is the second big problem. First being MODs credibility being questioned.

Keep in mind that any escrow payment would not be paid by any member that had the attempt to scam in the first place and any member that would pay the escrow would most likely pay at the end of the SL if it was judged against them. aka, it would seem to me that it wouldn't really gain anything and only open up more potential problems that were discussed earlier.

At the end of the day, SLs will work when the two (or more) members work towards the common goal of coming to a resolution that benefits all involved. When one or more of them, whether it be the provider(s) or the buyer(s) lack the desire to work it out, we try to find a way to push it towards a resolution. If one or more members are absolutely unwilling however, then things don't go as well as we would desire... and one or more ends up banned. It's never our desire for it end that way, but for the safety of the members, sometimes it's be best course of action.

Of course any kind of a percentage for the mods would only lead to some doubt of impartiality as the wise Wiz mentioned. Integrity and credibility are some of the most important traits for me - both here and IRL - I would not give that up for some paltry percentage. It's the same reason I have never rented out my signature space although I have been approached for it on numerous occasions. My integrity cannot be bought and I won't accept anything that puts my credibility into question.

I like that members are trying to come up with ways to make things work out better for themselves and others - but thinking about who they are dealing with and questioning more before they send their hard earned money to someone they've never met (and likely never will) would go a long way into keeping themselves from getting scammed. Providers should also think about who they are providing their service for - if they provide a service for someone with zero credibility (as in a new member with very few posts) then they are setting themselves up for the chargeback that comes.

Awesome thread. I never read any replies except old salts and other moderators but I did want to throw my opinion in.

In general the idea is genuine but the way I see it is the shitlist area is created not out of mandatory actions but instead a soft-proxy for those that wish to do business here and I think the mods deserve a huge high five and credit for the neutral hard work they do on each "case"

With that being said, I agree with netmoney's idea. Jack the price up for the threads in the BST section to 100$,200$ or 300$+. Not only would this increase revenue to the site but it make the hype thread creators think twice as it would be harder to get an "investment" return and increase quality as those who pay to advertise their services will have to put more time in insuring quality product/service
