I find it funny when people say they want an "SEO (or any other form of marketing really) specialist/expert" but the job either isn't actually full SEO (includes being a office bitch, for example) or requires you to be a client bitch or sales. Not only that but people only want to pay $10-15 an hour for a "specialist." Do people actually think that someone who is a specialist or expert in ANY field is going to work for $10-15 an hour? The best job posts I've found want 3 expertise's (e.gSEO/SEM/PPC) for the price of a burger flipper, do people not understand the word of specialist? Are people this naive to believe anyone with "expert" knowledge is going to work for scraps? Yallsumcheapmotherfckers.jpeg What do you guys think of working for so little when you are an expert or specialist?

To me, "Specialist" means "grab your coat and run like hell." :)

It's the same thing as calling oneself a "guru", although it is commonly
used by doctors and people in the military in a more authentic respect.

For instance, there are very few general practitioners as opposed to
"specialists" in the medical field. A gynecologist is a specialist in a
specific area of medicine.

Self-proclaimed "specialists" are a different story altogether.

Such a good point. You get what you pay for. I see all the time on here people expecting to get a $1k lamp job done for $20.

The people you're referring to aren't looking for a real specialist. Its just a nice label for a mind numbing, entry-level position. Its just slightly above 'guru'.

Buyers want to buy cheap. Sellers want to sell high. Congratulations, you have discovered the wheel :o

I don't see what your problem is though. If you want to sell your services at $X/hour, bother only with people who want to buy at $X/hour. Be sure that for those who want to pay $10/hour there are lots of other providers who are happy to sell to them.

$10 might be a small amount for you, but in many countries it is a above average sum to work for even a day. I hope to do a project for you in future. I will be a lot more demanding for sure :D

It means very very little to nothing for the most part.... I remember when a few years ago everybody was selling themselves as "social media" specialists and even put that on their resumes: needless to say most even IRL knew close to nothing partly because everything in this area was so new, but it was the typical buzz word that sounds so kewl..... ;)

Like Wiz said a specialist is somebody specialized in something. That's what makes a specialist good in that field. Instead of knowing bits about 10 things he knows a lot about 1 single thing. That's the connection from specialist to expert. Expert being somebody who knows a lot about something. Like you can learn English language in a couple of years and you'd know enough to speak and write English and communicate and reach your goals that are dependent on English. However, it would take you a lifetime to become an expert (e.g. linguist). In the end however you have the 80/20 rule.

Another thing, an expert and a specialist are not always the same thing. Sometimes to be an expert you need to cover multiple domains and be good in all.

When it comes to SEO, a true expert isn't an expert in SEO. There is no such thing as SEO as a skill. Multiple other skills used in a certain way towards a certain goal are what make SEO. You can learn coding, writing, SE stuff, research, graphics, web development, psychology, etc. and put them together to work towards your SEO needs. Thats one of the reasons people fail at becoming good at something, especially online. That's why they are delusional and think "I know SEO" but their results are crap. They think they have to learn SEO. No! They have to learn SKILLS not SEO. SEO is not a skill in itself.

When it comes to how the word is used it depends from person to person. Many people tout themselves as expert, specialist, pro, etc. Some do it because they want to think they're great at something and be perceived by others as being awesome (ego) others think that's what an employer looks for. If the employer himself writes his job ad worded like "looking for SEO expert" then you can't blame a guy loking for a job for saying he's an expert.

Hiring good people as well as finding a good employer is something most people have no idea how to do. The stuff many employers wish for and the questions they ask in an interview are just ridiculous.

Question: Do you work well in a team / do you prefer to be part of a team or work alone / etc ?
Standard answer: I love working in a team and i integrate well and communicate well with other people... blah blah
Honest answer: Depends! If the people in the team are great people and we happen to be on the same frequency we might actually get along and work togheter as a unit. If however the team contains too many idiots, assholes, unskilled people, people with attitude peoblems or a shitty boss, then no, i would absolutely hate it and will not work well in a team.

Just wanted to add that if you hear a honest answer - thats either an expert or a fool! :-)

I think about this Guru https://www.elance.com/s/pfpmarketing/10178/
You gotta go through his reviews, you will see that he basically sells Fiverr kind of a services for $$$ or $$$$
But I must say he is a smooth talk specialist

[h=2]About the Company[/h] -I believe that character matters. I'm not here to make a quick buck, I want to provide real value for a fair price, nothing more, nothing less.

-Relationships do matter. When people say things like, "It's just business" that means they are in the business of ripping people off.

Damn, looks like it is time to start bullshitting on Elance lol

It will always be in disharmony like an owner always feel labourers to be good for nothing and labour always feel to be underpaid and overburdened with work... Now the specialist is one who is not jack of all trades but master of one and handles that work with great expertise ..

You sir explained it spot on cudnt have been any better :)

The word specialist is fine if it's justified. But if someone just decides to call themselves a specialist without foundation, that's different.

I think to be a specialist in something, you need to have spent at least 10,000 hours doing it (Someone prominent came up with that theory I believe, but not sure who it was).

And I think you need to be realistic with the term specialist - it's got to be a very specific area that you are a specialist in.

In my opinion specialist is someone who does his job in such a way that the spectators start believing that they can also do the job quite easily. I remember an incident where a singer was performing on the stage and after the show one of the people sitting in audience went to appreciate him. Thereafter, he said to the singer that I can give my whole life to learn the music skills like you. Singer replied, "I had already done that".
