I have 2 questions - say you're going to buy or build 50 high PR contextual links (and you're trying to rank the keyword "link building" - just an example):

1) what anchors would you use for the 50 links? (exact match, related, generic etc - what would be the ratio?)

2) what content would you use? does it have to be 50 different articles or can it be one manually super spun article? also, i've been reading about co-occurrence, is this really something to take into account? and what about the content of the article - does it have to be about link building or can it be about something broader like seo or internet marketing or website promotion?

You can try something like this:
main keyword -40%
related keywords -20%
url/ domain name - 10 to 20%
generic keywords - 10% (like click here, go to page etc)

Answer: I'd use all, plus naked URLs.

Answer: I'd use 50 unique articles. I won't use spun content, not because I provide content writing services, but simply because of this rule: "garbage in, garbage out".

At the end of the day, it's all about testing.
Why don't you split-test?
50 unique articles vs 50 spun articles that sound like a mongoloid wrote them

Actually highly spun articles that read fine will do the job for link building only (not money sites) so no need to spend thousands on unique articles, it's simply pointless.
@OP: You can use broader topics as well, as long as it fits nicely in the context of the article to include a link back to your money site for your keywords!
Ratio for anchors IMO should be:
30% - generic
30% - naked URLS
30% - related keywords
10% - money keywords (sometimes even less depending on competition, your on-site SEO and how far you want to push it based on latest updates)

IMHO the keyword distribution should be
1) exact match - 30%
related keywords - 30%
generic - 30%
url - 10%
2) When it comes to content, use well written unique contents always. The content should be relevant to the niche and give information users.

I have my own small network of 20 domains, What i do is i use my Exact Match keywords in those high DA/PA domains and then i build links on other platforms like Article Dir, Forums, Blog comments to diversify the Anchor ration!

In my niche, I looked at one of the sites that ranks really well and other (generic) is about 90% of his links, 5% keywords and 5% brand name...

I try to emulate that...

It really depends what you are trying to achieve and whether you want quick ranking or long term.
