Just getting started in some small scale crypto mining what do you think there is to gain if anything? what would another coin need to do to become as much of a "success" as bitcoin?

It will require the right type of the community. Plus, I doubt that anything that builds on Bitcoin protocol will ever surpass Bitcoin itself.

However, if someone will improve upon Bitcoin (for example, make that blockchain much smaller), and put it in the right hands...

What kind of coins do you see having that right community? i see doge as having a big one but it almost seems like they're just demanding attention

Influencers, developers, traders, dreamers. I think these are needed most. With Doges I see only speculators, but may be I'm wrong.

lancis couldn't have said it any better. It will either need a huge community (like dogecoin) or a bunch of investment, or a particular technology that puts itself on a pedestal in the eyes of bitcoin influencers, developers, traders, and dreamers.

How about these "country coins" starting to pop up? aurora and mazacoin specifically, aurora alone seems very strange to me 50% premine in all

See it doesn't really matter about what the coin does.

As soon as it's avail for trading, the traders are making lots of money
based on the speculation of each coin. (Last one week max)

In the end all coins go to the graveyard.

Look at any coin from the time it started until now
and you'll see most have lost huge values
but in-between that - I've made tons buying and selling to hungry newbies all day long,

Plus you have the pump and dump crews (twitter only) who pump the price and drop it
so everybody in the club makes money. So as I said before the coin is not what matters,

IMHO. Only Today's Value Matters - Because Next Weeks Value Is Guaranteed To Be Shit.
