New to SEO, Not New to IM, quick question.

Hello everyone,

As the title states, I have done some IM in the past but it was primarily Social Network marketing for an offline business I was running (Club Promotions) for about two and a half (2.5) years.

I am looking to start diving into SEO and I am willing to learn it but I am having a bit of trouble completely understanding how SEO works exactly.

Are there any great explanatory threads that you guys would be willing to recommend that would help me grasp and understand how SEO works and what exactly it takes to build backlinks and pyramids?

Thank you for your time. For those who chime in to refer me to the search feature, please excuse yourself from the thread. I am not new to how the forum works and its features, I find that me searching for effective methods when I don't completely already understand how SEO works would be less productive than asking those of you who are experienced in SEO.

2008 or 2014 not much changes. Theres an algo to rank and we just have to find which is.

Thank you for the reply, I've debated on outsourcing the task to others. I think that it would of course much more beneficial to take that route, although with my minimal knowledge of SEO it would be difficult to understand the progress being made via those outsourced services. Also, I would like to understand more about keyword research to better serve a client or to better serve a project of my own.

Would you perhaps have anyone in mind for outsourcing the task to? out of curiosity, if it is a private matter I understand.

thank you very much sasha, I appreciate the list of links and the reply. I do understand the meaning of SEO, Search Engine Optimization, I just never took the time to necessarily study and learn it. Now that I look back on it, I do wish that I would've learned it back then but at the same time... it can never be too late to learn something new .

First off, I'd read a few of the things referenced in this thread. Just to get your head in the right place, more than anything else.

Second, Seo is 9 parts research and 1 part black magic. So after reading up on the basics, ignore any manual, system, or secret strategy you come across.

Instead, do this:

-Grab an Ahrefs, and Majestic SEO account. Semrush is helpful to.
-Research, research, research. Look at all the top sites in your given niche (Across a broad base of profitable keywords - but stay niche specific.)
-Repeat what your competitors are doing. Ideally, find a way to do the same thing more efficiently.

If the other guy has high quality links, you can buy those. If he has an aged domain, you can dig one up on flippa. If he has better content, you can outsource that. If he has a active social media presence, well hell, you can outsource that to.

Dont think "Research" just means looking at your competitors links though. Look at the links of the links. The PR, the reg dates, the mozrank. Look at his site structure, where links are going, and so on.

This is time consuming, but I guarantee if you spend a week seriously applying this kind of research methodology to the top 100 or so sites in your niche - you will know what works.

When you move to the next niche? The same strategy may or may not work. As of 2014, I find (few) constant in SEO across different niches. Yes high quality links are good, age is important, and so on, but each niche has its own "Flavor".

TLDR: Research the hell out of the top 10 sites for around 10 primary money keywords in your niche. Replicate what they do. Profit.

Thank you rodvan, I'll start looking into those videos.. I find that I learn much better when I can visually see and understand what is going on.

Thank you for your reply David, I definitely appreciate the feedback. I think that my main issue is finding the journeys, case studies, or threads that have been deemed successful and such.

The other key component that I believe I am lacking is that I dont necessarily understand the basics of SEO, such as how to build backlinks and why we actually build them and such.

Threads, journeys, and case studies can all be of GREAT information and knowledge (learn from others mistakes, instead of having to learn from your own per se), But without the fundamentals, I think it becomes difficult to follow what exactly the above mentioned are teaching.

Thank you AboutBizz, I greatly appreciate the links. I will check them out as well. I'm at that same point where I know that I know nothing about SEO yet, so to justify spending the money on programs that can multiply productivity is difficult for me. Simply because I don't exactly know the effectiveness and the basics enough to demand more productivity for.

Thanks Souljerr! I went through the links that Sasha provided and I guess I have a better understanding now. I think my on site SEO is good considering the age of my site and my IM experience, so I just need to focus on building backlinks and such.

Recently bought Scrapebox so I guess I'll go through the user guide of that next..

Noooo... don't do it. Scrapebox is both unnecessary and wildly dangerous in this era of SEO.
You're better off building quality 2.0's. That's literally all you need in order to rank in most easy to medium comp terms.

if your site is about "get 6 pack abs", then create web 2.0s like "Bob's Fitness Journey", "useful fitness info" etc. like they're your money sites, link back to your own real site, and blast links.
