Yes we do check the backlinks & archive.org MANUALLY. Plus ideally they all need to be aligned as much as possible i.e if the previous domain was about a restaurant then the backlinks should come from a related niche (food/local biz directory), the anchor text, indexed pages & the previous history of the domain through archive.org should also show the same thing, that why we can be 99% certain that its a clean domain.
