A tough question regards 301 redirect - need advice from experts

Just for simplicity, lets pretend that all backlinks has the same quality. Is it better to have 100 backlinks from 100 different domains, or have a 301 redirect with a domain that have 200 backlinks?

Please give me your thoughts about this.

Don't limit to just one or the other. G currently equates a 301 to a standard link, so really there's no reason to even 301 that site when you could just link it and get the same benefit.

I just 301d a penalized site to a new domain with no other backlinks, and the new domain was in the top 20 within 10 days. Are you saying I would have been top-20 if I had just linked from the penalized domain instead? :lmao:

301 is a fine, fine way to rank - though it depends on the quality of the links, regardless of whether they point directly at your site or through a 301.

Nice question dude -- To be honest, haven't tested it yet. However, if there are quality back links then 100 links straight to the main money making site -- Keep main anchor 5-10%, if you're linking directly to main site.

Direct links is better than 301 IMHO.

Here's the deal. Matt Cutts has said 301's pass the same amount of juice as a link from a page. BUT, and this is a big BUT, 301's don't divert the link juice nearly as much as links do. With a link, you have the site's internal navigation, other outbound links, footer links, etc. With 301's, that shit goes straight through. So while they in theory pass the same amount of juice, a link will not get you the same power as a 301 (assuming your goal is to pass PageRank).

Well observed I agree entirely. That's why 301's are, and will continue to be, my (not so) secret weapon.

it's said that a 301 is a much more economic way to rank your site and a safer one. economic as in you can move away that 301 anytime to anywhere and still own that ranking power. in today's seo environment, I'll vote for 301.

ok like I previously stated I have never used the 301 technique. I have a domain that has a ton of links, some nice DA and is PR 3.

My question is and please forgive me if this is a total NOOB question but when you redirect the site do you just forward the domain to the new site at you registrar? or is it not so simple?

You can redirect through your registrar, but ideally you would (if the site is wordpress) block link tracking bots like aHrefs and Majestic with a plugin called Spyder Spanker, or edit your htaccess file to block the bots and handle the redirect. I think Tony_D does both. Just google Spyder Spanker or htaccess 301 redirect.

Thanks man for the guidance but just for clarification on this statement are you saying I should use that plugin on the new site or the one I am redirecting? I am assuming this would be done on the new site...the one accepting the redirect?

It is safe and google recommend it! See "Moving your site" on webmasters/answer/83105 .

If the domain that will do the redirect is ranked, than the newer domain will get its ranks in about 2 weeks.
100 links to new domain can't be safe - any 100 links!
