How Bad Is Duplicate Content

Hey guys,

So for our company we have listings on Etsy. But we also use Etsy-like sites that have an importer function. This includes copying the description..

How bad is it that we don't change that and have it over the course of 5-10 sites?

Should we be changing the first 140-200 characters?

It would be smart to change at least 50% of the content if you want to rank on the search engines, if you can't change the whole article.

There are some sites who are doing pretty good with duplicate content, like RSS type sites who take 100 words of the actual content and link to it, but overall it's not recommended.

You only need one of these sites to rank (probably Etsy) so assuming your Etsy pages are already indexed, they will not suffer from having dupe content on the other sites you export your listings to.

Copied content is extremly bad if you're aiming to rank in Google. You could use some spinners such as WordAI.

It would depend whether you would like to rank on search engines for them on different websites. Also, check each of your multiple listings to see how much different they are from one another as normally pages tend to have more than just content that you may have put.

It's never bad to be your own competition. I don't mean to be rude, but it seems like a really high percentage of questions are "how little work can I do and still make money?"

Get a couple of good copywriters and re-write the content. Pay a couple fiverr people to re-write it for you. Just do it (or have it done), and improve your search listings. I don't really see a reason to ignore search even if your main focus is social.

Yeah, but once that site owner reports you for stealing his/her content, your site gets deindexed from google. Or wait till one of google animals bites your site on the next update.

Mostly you can rank even with copied content, till the next update or till owner reports you.

Okay I have to admit I'm a little confused on the different opinions from everyone.

Is it bad between sites like Etsy and other Etsy-like sites? Will it hurt the ranking of my main site, or just the ones with duplicate? Or will it just not help?
