How Bad Is Duplicate Content

No such thing. According to Matt Cutts, 30% of all internet content is duplicated.

Copying some one work and use it not what is ethical but if your are about to make some money and to switch next site and so on it can work but if you want to rank a legit site for longer period of time than use spinner software they are plenty available in market.

Had a prospective client call me up today. He says: "I am going to create 300 sites and just use the same content on them. I spoke to a SEO company today and he said that would be fine. Can you rank them for us?"

While I typically do my best to avoid posting content on any of my sites that have already been posted elsewhere, in my personal experience it isn't actually that bad. If they've implemented G Authorship or Publisher markups (not sure which one actually takes precedence over this issue), however, I would avoid it like the plague. I don't really know how this works in regards to ecommerce sites.
On-site duplicate content it a huge problem, too. Make sure that doesn't happen.

That's really surprising. But I think the factor of duplicate content also depends on nature of WEBSITE/NICHE/TOPIC I guess.

But still, I don't think its that much easy to rank with duplicate content. Because, from last few updates Google constantly targeting duplicate content factor. May be you're among those luckiest persons on earth who won against Google God. ;)

I have no idea how bad the duplicate content would be. I recently ranked a site with 100% duplicate content and it even crossed the actual site in serps from which I copied the content from.

Okay I have to admit I'm a little confused on the different opinions from everyone.

Is it bad between sites like Etsy and other Etsy-like sites? Will it hurt the ranking of my main site, or just the ones with duplicate? Or will it just not help?

What will I be hurting?

Hopefully, you will get penalty from the big G for duplicate content. Search engine will omit similar contents in the search result and display only the original source. And your ranking also will get affected for sure.

I would rewrite at least part of the text just to be safe.

The amount of difficulty this is going to cause you is going to be directly related to the quality of the site. With product sales it a very common for multiple websites to use the same product details.

If your concern is to save time and get these products out there, don't sweat it right now. But if you want to do what is best to rank these pages, create unique content everywhere you can.

You can create uniqueness by adding content instead of rewriting the information you have. If your site is a quality site, adding content will be sufficient to "dilute" the percentage of duplicate content on the page. Reviews are especially good for this.

You will actually have a bigger problem when listing similar products on the same domain. This is where you can really get hurt.

I personally believe that we should never challenge the google guidelines, Now a days Google data is increasing like anything! So, Google is in a mood of extra and useless sites with copied contents. So, Nothing is greater then High Quality, Informative and Unique contents.

I personally believe that we should never challenge the google guidelines, ...

I don't really understand people that join BHW then come out with sentences like that.
I realise this is the WH section but even then I think we should be pushing things as much as we can.
No matter how WH you are, Google will never do you any favours until you are making them serious ad revenue.

Duplicate content is bad, period. Now that Google has changed the way SERP's work and it is more and more concentrated on the quality of the content, then avoid it. If you want to rank in Google, create/write original articles, spin it or something.

its like poison , death bringer etc in simple words Google will fuck you for duplicate content.

Well That from my point it depends on your priority factors .
If you are focusing mainly on search engine Organic traffic and want to draw a good load of UV from Google daily then yes avoid copying the description and change it as much possible ..

But if you site is mostly Local based , targeting a particular country/Zone and focusing on Local listing etc etc and you priority lies mostly in creating a branding of your site and draw traffics from Social Media sites Like FB/Twitter/Pinterest .. Then Description doesn't plays that huge role. .

yet To stay on the safer side as It is never advisable to ignore the search engine traffics and for that you should always play safe which means having unique contents Ofcourse..
