I don't think I'm far wrong when I say that most bloggers can only dream of being able to earn a living with their blog. Has anyone here achieved that and what's the main ingredient?

The ONLY key to remember when it comes to making a living is this:

TRAFFIC

I mean that.
If you can get 500k+ unique visitors to your blog, idc what you're selling or advertising on it - you'll be profitable.

That being said, throw up a blog & research promotion methods for it.

Yeah, I reckon we'd all be making a living with that number of traffic.

Actually many people have achieved this, but it all depends on your needs, some are happy with 1k months, others with 5k. It all depends what do you mean by bigtime

I would be very happy with an extra $1k a month from blogging. Doing something I love and earning money doing it is the ultimate dream. Definately doable by quite a few bloggers, why not me?

Blogging takes time to get going to build a site and then to monetize correctly .. also you have to stay interested in the topic over several years which is often hard to do.

that's why many people tend to use more aggressive techniques to make money with - than go with Blog only sites.

That would be why the majority of bloggers don't make it. Staying interested in one thing in this age of distraction is very hard.

The first thing you really need to consider is your subject matter. Rand did a much better job covering that than I could so check out Blogging in an Blogging .

It's not as hard as it sounds. You should have a good knowledge of on-site SEO, and try not violate Adsense ToS, if you go that route.

I speak from experience.

it is attainable. I got friends who are doing it full time..
You just need to find a good niche - that the viewer
really want to check everyday. Through some adsense
or CPA or if you target local markets, you can let
companies/product rent a space in your blog for 'xx amount'
for 'x month' kind of subscription.

Some people who make the most money blogging never got into it for the money
but did it because they enjoy it and just so happens Google loved their high quality content and stories
and they ended up monetizing it for some serious coin.

Do what you love and be the best at it then count your money.

There're many many bloggers who are able to do this. But this surely take lots of time and you'll have to depend mostly on SEO, Google for traffic.

If you're able to rank websites and you are good in writing contents then you should definitely try blogging.

It can't be achieved overnight, but you can get it over a course of time with right strategies in practice. If you're great writer, start blogging and pull visitors through social channels. Once the readers find the contents of their interest and if they start sharing your contents then you're almost there reaching your target. Meanwhile signup for best running affiliate programs, that'll help you earning good sum of money.
