its you tell direct tv that your going to cancel, then they lower you bill and give you hbo. If they call you out on your bluff and you have to cancel, they call you back in a week and offer you a good deal... I have been doing it for the last 2 years. Im sure thats why the op is talking about

How can you cancel when there's a contract for 1-2 years? it must be be afterwards or something??

Here is what you do....call dtv and ask to speak to the retention department. Once you reach them, tell them that you are military and your getting deployed. Dtv has to cancel your commitment. its a part of their policy. You can also ask to suspend your account for 6 months. All billing stops once you suspend your acct. i know everything about dtv
