Taking courses in college for IM worth it..?

I have been looking at website development courses in my local college and was wondering what you BHWers think of it all. Do you think it's necessary to be successful in IM?

You can learn most things online for website development and if you look hard enough you can find some decent courses for free. Youtube is also a good source. But if you enjoy a classroom setting learning along side with others then college is one way to go. Who knows you might have some potential partners in your future IM journeys

I'm just wondering if the people who know how to code etc on BHW learned on their own or through schooling haha.

If you really want to take it, go ahead! Like Kinlee said, there are a lot of free courses online. BUT PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEASE - do not take the course if it does not count as a credit towards your degree.

I took courses that didnt count towards my degree. They counted as an unofficial credit, to help calculate if you're going full time, part time, etc. Taking courses that do no credit towards your degree will cost you as much as a credible course, and will obviously take up time.

Knowing how to develop a site is not necessary at all.

That said... You don't necessarily need to take courses on development in order to learn it.

I learned by doing things when I needed to do them. It's not impossible, not even really hard if you know how to use Google.

The money the courses would cost are probably better spent on domains and hosting, etc...

If you were to take a course, marketing would probably be a better bet.

I taught myself to code, I prefer teaching myself rather than going to a college. It's personal preference though, do what you feel is right for you.

I feel like becoming an entrepreneur is my calling. I currently have a pretty good paying full time job as a 20 year old and saving all the money I can for future investments. 3-5k for a college course which I don't know is ever going to pay off is a bit sketchy to me at the least...

Website development and IM are completely different.

I have a friend that did a web design course and he can create very nice sites with Jooomla but cannot rank or market them.

I would suggest lynda.com for learning web development. And I would also suggest Joomla, its really easy to create professional looking website. They also have SEO tutorials on lynda too but I cant give an opinion because I havent watched them.

Also you can find most of the videos on torrents by searching ["Title of Video" lynda] in google.

I really don't think you need to take a college course. There are countless books online that taught people to make money. I feel its a huge investment of money and time to go to college for something that you can learn and evolve with.

There are definitely harder things to do.

Get familiar with HTML and CSS by making a few static sites that you're happy with (check out Foundation by Zurb, easy platform to build from quickly). Meanwhile, learn WP by finding some templates around here and breaking them.

Once you're familiar with HTML and CSS, you can build most of a WP theme. The rest of it is all in WP functions which are all fairly well documented.

It's pretty much like any art form. Not hard at all to learn. A complete bitch to master.

Actually I think school is waste of time in website development, you get more info online. The classes are short and most of the things you need to learn by yourself, so why waste the money. You can find so much info for free, tons of videos on youtube, tutorials on many websites and etc
