Taking courses in college for IM worth it..?

Get the Tuts+ courses. I have a man crush on Jeffrey Way, such a charismatic voice.
Get some of these courses. Either acquire them via torrents, or Tuts+ premium.
I support either option, as long as you use your money for philanthropist needs.

Website development?

4 word:
hostgator
namecheap
wordpress
optimizepress

Except for namecheap, you just listed everything that's turning the internet into one big noob party.

What ever happened to reading some freaking books and LEARNING how to code websites? Instead of installing 1000 plugins and hoping something will work.

Honestly, this aspect will never go away. Somebody still creates the plugins, and makes bank off of them. Make an amazon plugin, and sneak your code in there as default. They make the money for you; the people who never care to set up a great website.

I have been looking at website development courses in my local college and was wondering what you BHWers think of it all. Do you think it's necessary to be successful in IM?
try online courses that are free..i did almost 7-8 courses but never completed any ..but always paid full amount...untill u have zeal these courses won't benefit you...but if you have zeal than you might not need these courses..
thats what i have experienced

So you are not sure if you should pay for someone to explain some free information? Doesnt make much sense lol

Courses/University is good because there you can meet people who can become your partners, or help you as a friend. On other side its waist of time and money. If you feel you want to learn something, Internet has it all, there are free online courses and there is stackoverflow. For IM there is BHW. At present where everyone has Internet access, teachers are just middleman who takes your money and teaches you things that are availible on the net. Just my opinion :)

Good luck

Of course! Thats what I'm going to do - benefit on what I want to learn , Just gain lots of knowledge and go at it!

I want to learn 5 major coding languages and will do IM too :)

there are two types of people when it comes to learning:

1. Those that can learn by themselves
2. Those that can't focus on learning by themselves due to whatever reason

If you can sit your ass down a set period of time daily without browsing the internet, then you don't need to visit a college class! There are tons of great books out there, buy yourself a kindle and read them while sitting at the beach/in the park etc.

If you need help learning, visit a class!

It's as easy as that.

You can find all info that you need on the forum or online for free from your pc, but take some lessons about IM might not be a bad idea

Why pay someone to teach you when you can learn everything you need online and a lot on this forum? You can also learn it a lot quicker online.

Anyone know which books were the most beneficial for someone start from the very bottom of knowledge in coding? I think I will sit in a library for a few hours a week.

I have a strong belief in self-education when it comes to IM.

It's not needed at all, i've never taken any courses in college for IM and after 6 months of teaching myself I am making more each year than the top college professors. This forum is your classroom, study hard.

I renewed my library card and will be self teaching myself to code :). I also feel extremely motivated this year, best of luck to myself and everyone else!

You can certainly learn a lot on your own or by taking the paid courses. IMO it's better to learn on your own at your own pace instead of being force fed the info but everyone is different.

I was never great in todays education system. What I did realize about myself in these past few years is that I learn extremely well when I want to learn a specific thing. It becomes my purpose. So I don't think being taught is the best idea for me. Thanks for the wisdom guys, love you all!

Hi thatkoreanguy, hope you have a clearer idea of what you want to do...

From my own experience, I find that studying in a class room is only good if you want to interact with people, I felt my two degrees meant nothing in the real world, it was only when I started learning on the job, that' s when the biggest break thru came.

When it comes to IM, it is especially true, it's best to learn online and put things to practise, try out different areas. See which avenue of IM you want to focus on and keep on at it (take it to completion). Then go on to the next project rinse and repeat or something new all together.
