An email sent from my future self?

Alright, something odd just recently happened, I got an email from myself which I did not send and it was in one of my sent mails folder?
Here's the email I received:

Hello, Fared.


Yes, it is I — that is — YOU, from the future. I have managed to get access to an information-sending time-travel device, with which I have sent you this email.


My warning for you is to STOP MAKING MONEY, right now. If you persist in your endeavor, events will spiral out of control and, eventually, contribute towards the Great Economic Collapse of 2017 (which then went on to cause the devastating-but-brief World War 3).


Please, it is imperative that you stop now. The entire world is counting on you.

Okay anyways, one of my friends asked me if I received an email from my future self and he revealed it was a prank with the aid of a website. His a 13 year old fellow, and his quite into doing tricks such as this. He currently sees me as a money making freak. What I find extremely irritating is that he refuses to tell me what website he used to send an email to one's own self in case I abuse it, and that it was only made for pranks. If your wondering if he has hacked or logged into my account, then I can definitely assure you he hasn't. If any of you fellows out there knew what he used to commit such sorcery, then I'd be happy to know!

And no, I've tried several websites like this, which isn't it as they require you to verify your email address, which basically ruins the whole point. The one I received consisted of no signatures or verification emails.

Your email wasn't hacked, and the answer is quite simple. Do a quick Google search for email spoofing.

It's just spoofing the email address. Nothing fancy. I get spam from myself all the time. Even Gmail can detect it as spam.

In college, we did something similar but we had a mail server already configured. The only problem was that the mail got into Spam, but it appeared as being sent from from your own e-mail address. Now I really wish I learned how to do that ) Oh well, I'll just have to ask some new students on next semester.

What all those free sites available on the internet have in common is they have those "this email was sent with [site name]" signatures which basically ruins the whole point. Apparently they do that to disallow any illegal activities.
