Directories still good?

Quality directories are still good, and most likely will always be. Unfortunately, though, most quality directories are not free or it will take quite a long time to get your submission reviewed.

Finally someone who agrees with me :D

DMOZ and Yahoo used to correlate strongly with rankings... I'd say the correlation is much weaker today. 2 years ago I would have paid $20K to get a handful of dmoz links... this year it isn't worth my time to fill the free site submissions...

I think it is a combination of effects... first, directories do less for you now... and second, we've largely learned to succeed without them because yahoo is pricey and DMOZ is impossible and both are a crap shoot on getting on the proper category with the proper link text. Is the time and money worth the gamble or should you focus on other channels where you have more control and the results have more certainty?

The reason DMOZ has always been strong is that google used to give them weight and dmoz is syndicated so a link there gets replicated to hundreds of other web directories. I know that for years the yahoo directory was frequently scraped for content in new web directories. In a way it was syndicated too... probably not so much these days.

I second this one.

Nowadays I tend to stick to niche related directories just to mix-up or diversify the anchor text / link profile. They still have value in this sense.

Automated directory submissions should be a no no. Go for niche specific ones that do not allow auto approvals. Pick those that have established authority.

I think 367th time to hear "Directories still good?" from newbies. Why you guys are not searching in our forum section. For this question most popular experts directories good or not. Then why you're asking again n again like this.

Anyways, directories are working good. But mostly sites are SPAM only. So, you need to find analyse and try that. Mostly newbies never look out SPAM related directories. They're promoted all kind of directories. So, BE AWARE from SPAM directories.

Try it. Cheers :)

Think about it from an other angle. Check if the site/page is listed in the top 100 or 50 in google for your search terms. If not, google probable doesn't value it much for that, so your link won't worth too much. In general, you need links from pages are listed as high as possible in serp for your keywords. Why? Because those are the pages google values the most for sure.

Local business directories still work! Tee-hee : ) Sure, there are directories that are still good. Consider CommunitySEO.com for example. Very slick, good quality, curated directory. It is usually pretty obvious what is crap and what isn't. I may be bias however, I am currently doing some link removal and it is directory after shitty directory. Not so fun.

I know some people start their linking campaign by posting to paid directories like the one you mentioned. Few outbound link, Niche related and authority. They are enjoying their +1000$ per day :-) just dont over do it because it wont be natural to have most of your backlinks as directories
