Godaddy asking for scanned ID!

Hi BHW members,
A few days ago I purchased a domain from Godaddy and they are now asking me to upload scanned ID to unlock my account. I don't know why they did that, but I'm in a dilemma because I entered a different country in the registrar's address and used a phone number from that country
I don't know what should I do now. Should I upload my normal (residence country) ID and will they unblock my account if I do so?
I purchased domains from them using the same info last year and they didn't ask for any verification.

I think there is nothing wrong to upload a copy of your ID with a hidden information as long as you're not running any spam/illegal websites who could get you in trouble.

They're not likely to use the ID to verify your whois information for a domain. If that was the case they wouldn't even allow to alter whois information in the first place, they would just automatically use your account info and not let you change it. They're probably asking for an ID for account security/payment verification issues.

Serve did this to me once, when I was homeless.
I had no way to prove my address on my bank account was my real address, a friend let me use his
and it didn't match up to my drivers license address.

So I scanned my ID and edited it in paint, lmfao and they accepted it.

I just copy pasted the letters/numbers on my ID to spell out the other address.
Funny thing was, I didn't have the letters for the "ave", no "V"

So instead of trying to figure out the correct font to use to make my own "V", I just left off the "ave"

they never said a word.

when you enter data on forms, do you sometimes find that the autocomplete thing just happens to enter random data that you have no idea how it has happened? this always happens to me in similar situations.

What if you have many domain from different clients in 1 account? and you put the info of your client on the domains?

It's becoming a trend now. Even the cheapest services are asking for ID's....anonymity and privacy on the WWW are dying a little each day.

hehe, this happened with me only once when I was filling a form for getting admission in University, and in place of my father's name it was my name i was like wtf, how did that happen?
from that time i'm being more careful

I uploaded my ID proof, but then they asked for a proof which showed that the account I used for payment is mine. I had no choice so I uploaded a scanned copy of my card, and they unblocked my account. The only problem is that those morons removed the domain and now I have to purchase it again.:damnit:
So, I anyhow registered the domain at the same price of $2.17, even though the old coupon wasn't working
so everything's cool now.

This usually happens when someone has multiple accounts with godaddy in order to use the codes but they only use 1 credit card.Atleast thats what happened to me once.I have 3 accounts and i used my cc with all 3 so godaddy blocked it cause "illegal activity".After i uploaded the ID they unblocked me.You can have multiple accounts.They just want to see if not someone else is using your creditcard.Cheers!

I've been with GoDaddy since 2006 and they have never asked for any identification. I have bought 100s of domain names. I am going with NameCheap now since GoDaddy customer service suck di*k and their prices.

My best advice to you is upload your real ID. They will unlock your account within couple of hours. They are getting shittier by the day and probably trying to scale up their security against credit card/identity theft. Nothing major.

Its unfortunate people upload these IDs. The more customers they will loose, the less trendy it will become.

I personally leave, once they start to mention ID, or sometimes phone numbers. E.q. every company out there should stick to its "need to know basis". For example, GoDaddy is not on the "really needs to know the ID" list, and Facebook/Google is not on the "really needs to know the phone number" list.
