301 Redirect for negative SEO. This is a problem.

You have to modify that code a bit. Instead of

RewriteRule .* - [F]

Set a permanent redirect to some other site like google ( they deserve it.. j/k).

The important piece there is the referrer.

Doesn't that just send the traffic coming from the redirects to an error page? I'm not sure if that will actually prevent the bad link juice/penalty coming to my site. Any one have experience with this?

I doubt a referrer based redirect works for your rankings. It works for people following the links, but not for spiders: SE crawlers don't traverse links (and probably redirects) like humans, when the crawler sees an outbound link (or redirect) it doesn't run immediately after it, it just stores the target in it's database. Later on it visits the link/301 target and adds these information to the database (without your sever getting the referrer). Correct me, if I am wrong.

That's mostly true but there are spiders that do set the referrer. Just recently I was checking some logs out and there was this flurry of requests from some bot on a particular site, and it was setting all the referrers...

Also, there are funny requests from Google IP's which do set the referrer....

Just go to Google's webmaster help forum and ask advice from them. The dipshits there will tell you negative seo does not exist or they have never seen a case of negative seo working. I think those buttphucks work for Google because we all know better.

In any case, I don't believe in working for Google for free by disavowing links to build some bullshit database to be used against myself and others. But sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do. AFAIK, the disavow tool will accept anything you put in there. Take all the redirects and disavow them on a domain level so that any link originating from those domains will be disavowed.

Htaccess can definitely block traffic originating from those domains, but it won't do diddly squat to protect your ranks against negative seo.

I've already added em to disavow list, and blocking traffic with htaccess.

Wow... This is the first time that I've heard of someone doing a 301 redirect as part of Negative SEO! Competition isn't stopping at anything now a days. I wish I could help but I honestly am unsure on which approach you should take on recovering from something like this.

In regards to your problem even blocking the 301's will be too late. I use 301's myself to gain quick rankings and it doesnt show up on any of the backlink services until at least 4-5 days after the 301's have taken effect.

I am presuming you are in a competitive niche and therefore I would use these redirects as a tool now. You should quickly build another site, 301 you current site to the new one and your rankings will reappear if only for a short period. Blast all the redirected domains with your keywords too. Trust me, redirects work as a short term SEO solution if your niche is in a high daily profit niche.

Just came across not one, but fucking 45 301 redirects pointing at one of my clients sites that we have NOTHING to do with. The rankings have already started slipping, and there's absolutely nothing I can do except keep building links in hopes to stop the bad effect. This is certainly more frustrating than standard negative SEO, because at least you could disavow links. Can you even disavow a 301? The SERPs are so easy to manipulate (in a bad way). This shit is getting out of control.

Are you sure your client wasnt participating in Neg SEO attacks on competitors beforehand? It might be a sweet revenge as well.Nothing your client can do, honestly. I did such a revenge myself. There is no cure before Google decides to do something with it.

Don't hate the guys that do negative SEO. You should hope they and everyone else does more of it. In fact the more mainstream it becomes, the more likely Google will look back at the shit they did as a big mistake. The FTC and other government agencies may take notice too as it places a huge burden on small businesses and empowers competitors to anonymously harm one another and diminish the value of commerce online. By then, however, Google may be a paid search engine so organic search positions won't matter much. But in the meantime, I do know some legit businesses that got nailed hard with NSEO. So bad that one is already letting employees go, which is absolutely terrible. I got hit with NSEO too, but my livelihood does not depend on one site as some brick and mortars do. PS: I know the whole FTC and government agencies getting involved is a pipe dream. But for once I'd like to see these government employees get off their fat asses and actually do something to protect small businesses and online commerce.
