New AI algorithms beat CAPTCHA tests 90% of the time

San Francisco-based artificial intelligence startup Vicarious has announced that it has developed software algorithms which can solve CAPTCHAs up to 90 percent of the time.

Though CAPTCHAs are any automated test which differentiates between humans and computers, they often take the form of strings of partly distorted letters and numbers which many websites use to check that a visitor is human, the idea being that a computer cannot read the disguised text while a human (hopefully) can. It's this type of CAPTCHA that Vicarious's algorithms are designed to beat, and the high success rate renders the current standard of text-based CAPTCHAs ineffective, the company claims.

A CAPTCHA scheme is considered broken if an algorithm is able to reach a precision of at least 1%.[1] By leveraging core insights from machine learning and neuroscience, the Vicarious AI achieves success rates up to 90% on modern CAPTCHAs from Google, Yahoo, PayPal, Captcha.com, and others. This advancement renders text-based CAPTCHAs no longer effective as a Turing test.


"Recent AI systems like IBM?s Watson and deep neural networks rely on brute force: connecting massive computing power to massive datasets. This is the first time this distinctively human act of perception has been achieved, and it uses relatively minuscule amounts of data and computing power. The Vicarious algorithms achieve a level of effectiveness and efficiency much closer to actual human brains", said Vicarious co-founder D. Scott Phoenix.


"Understanding how brain creates intelligence is the ultimate scientific challenge. Vicarious has a long term strategy for developing human level artificial intelligence, and it starts with building a brain-like vision system. Modern CAPTCHAs provide a snapshot of the challenges of visual perception, and solving those in a general way required us to understand how the brain does it", said Vicarious co-founder Dr. Dileep George.


Solving CAPTCHA is the first public demonstration of the capabilities of Vicarious? Recursive Cortical Network (RCN) technology. Although still many years away, the commercial applications of RCN will have broad implications for robotics, medical image analysis, image and video search, and many other fields.

So thats why they include photographs of actual street numbers now?
 
So thats why they include photographs of actual street numbers now?

I think that's so they can identify house numbers for Google Maps that they can't automatically work out, but it might be for both reasons.
 
Just checked their paper and they can't solve recaptcha and Google captcha, so nothing new. Maybe CB or CS is better than their algo :D
 
I doubt there is an algorithm for this type of CAPTCHA:

"which animal has a tail?"

a. Dog
b. Monkey
c. Bird

I've seen it quite a few time already. In my opinion, from a website owner's point of view, these are MUCH better than the standard deformed numbers CAPTCHAs. Its easier for people to solve and harder for bots.
 
deathbycaptcha captcha solving service has rate of 92% and it's solved by humans, this software actually has great results
 
The end of all of this are the captchas that are a game, like make a slam dunk with the basketball, quite entertaining, but not for IMmers
 
Very interesting, however there just be a new variation of captcha that will have to be broken after they change it to something more complex

no big thing since even captcha sniper can break it at 10%
 
lol even my own brain solve rate is like 20% for the true captchas :D


new captchas started to be more likely solving image puzzles playing games etc
