Google update just now? 10/4?

Weird, my homepage isn't ranking at all but the inner pages are. What is this? It's like all the kws my homepage was ranking for have gone and have done since the update. Inner pages are doing well and ranking for the main kw that the homepage was ranking for.

Will this come back? Can you just get a homepage penalised and not the rest of the site? I've never seen this before.

Change up your front page a little, rewrite the title, meta kw and description and rewrite the texts a little and see what happens.

Hmmm these are sites that have been around for 7-8 years with quality everything, nicely optimised on-page etc etc. I'll try it with one site and see how it goes. If they were penalised then I'd expect the inner pages to go south as well.

Same for me. the only way to see my home page is to "show similar search results that were omitted" How stupid is that.

Are other sites copying your text? But I do agree, Google's algorithm is acting pretty retarded these days. This is by design IMO. The more people are kept guessing, the easier it is for them to rank the sites they want to - Amazon, eBay, Facebook and the others in the corporate cartel called the Internet Association.

As you said its very weird. I was no1 for a very long time. Now I am not even no1 if I actually copy the first 2 sentences of my home page and paste in google. I come out at no3! All the top spaces for me are now Amazon, Ebay, Webmd, Videos and Wikipedia.

My home page text is written by me and isnt copied on these others sites. I have no idea why google chooses to omit it from the search results and show my inner pages.

Website came back up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most my keywords that vanished are back in the top 3 of google. They were gone for 11 days so I'm a happy man.
I didn't do anything to the site either. No disavows, no nothing. I don't wanna give people false hope, but keep your
hopes up... cause in the blink of an eye everything can go back to normal. =]

It is funny to see the conversation die as people figure out how to get their rankings back! :) All of a sudden the sky is not falling!

what if google has taken manual action, should i use disavow for blog comments i purchased coz i see no hope of getting those removed?

Usually you see a message in Google Webmasters Tools if Google has taken manual action ...

I have 15 sites I am tracking. Overall some of the rankings have come back up with some of the sites, but those sites probably still have only about 50% of their original traffic.

Sites where I ordered a lot of Web 2.0, blog comments, tierd link building are the sites that got hit the hardest. Some where manual built web 2.0, a lot were tool generated.

I had 2 newer sites where I only built links with NHSEO and private high PR blog posts. So far these sites have not been hit and have actually been climbing in the SERP's. I am hoping it is more because of the type of links and not because they were sites where I had just started linkbuilding 1 month ago.

Most of the sites that got hit, have regained some of their rankings but traffic is still much less than what it was, but they look like they are still in the game.

I had 2 sites that were hit with the Sape update a month before and have the manual penalty message. These sites had dropped to the 40's with the Sape update, now they don't even show in the top 300 for a lot of their keywords. These sites also had the the type of links that hit my other sites the hardest.

I guess I am down, but not out and now time to build more but less spammy links. Need links to rank for some sites, so need to keep trying to find what works now.

My keywords keep jumping up and down. From 80 to 160 to 85 to 150 to 80 to 160 etc. etc. Will G. ever finish this bs?

Same is happening for few of my sites. Ranking keep on dancing and still waiting for few more days before taking any steps but expecting the rankings to comeback soon.

Did you (and others) keep on link-building? If anything I've upped my game with various types of link-building. However, the sites that didn't get hit are climbing, but the ones that were hit are sat flickering around a little. Some sites are jumping up and down as others have said by hundreds of positions every few hours (and have been for nearly two weeks, looking like they will never settle). Nothing makes sense, it's so difficult to track and figure out. The sites that are on the up are very slow in doing so, like one position every few days (this to me is cool, but I'm used to big jumps forward).

I'd say if you got hit by the latest updates you should be thinking "downsizing" links, not adding even more.... If you've been flagged for a bad link profile, either you get links from stanford.edu home page authority level, or you don't get any more links IMO.

I am not quite sure on this.. I gave one of my sites a good boost a couple a days ago ( still am ) with a variation of a backlinks ( which i will share later on if this succeeds ) and its showing improvements these days. Rankings are slowly improving, i was at 100+ now its 4th-5th page .But its still early i dont want to jump into conclusions here.

I also don't want to imply my solution is the only one. Maybe there's more than one kind of penalty at play here. I can report though that I recovered a site(from the september onslaught, not the october one) by disavowing all links. It was dead, so I thought what could my client lose? I disavowed all of them and it came back a few days ago....and survived the oct. 4 thing too....

But maybe there are other factors, and maybe in your case you should add links, but mostly, on average, the problems were related to too many bad links, not too few from my first observations and practical tests....

Well, i got hit as a many others. However sites slowly step by step getting back for the position. They are not at the place they used to be but I wont touch it for now. Anyway buying new domains and doing backup plan ;)

Indeed, it's a dance ... some of my kws were at 300 .. yesterday they moved to 120. I see big changes ... up and down ...

But you didn't know what I was doing beforehand ;) Some clients won't give me access to their GWMT account so it's difficult to see what links would be classed as 'bad'. I use various other tools but surely if they are in GWMT then it will be easier to 'guess' at what are bad links or not. Funny thing is, my spam sites haven't been touched and are rising. I don't want to spam my clients' sites but the answers from testing aren't showing me that I shouldn't...

I only have a problem with losing homepage rankings and it's not across 25 sites either. Some have, some haven't. All have been subjected to very similar link-building in the past. Age, DA, PA vary across those 25 sites. Only 3-4 have been hit and just their homepages. I obviously don't just build links to the homepage, either.
