How did you learn your skill?

Title says it all. I know a lot of us are self taught in our field, so I want to know what you did to learn your particular skillset?

For example: Web design. I learnt some basic HTML back in the Myspace days, dissecting the code for profile modifications. I hated the referral links they hid in their code. ;)

And it went from there. I got a call out of the blue about two years ago from a distant acquaintance I knew from church, they wanted a website for their company. So I decided to do it, I learnt Wordpress, and started doing Web Design full time, learning CSS on the way. I've picked up some PHP knowledge as well, and can get done what I need to do, but in no way can I actually code yet. So that's my next side project, learning to code properly. I have a few of the most well known CMS's on localhost, and I'm going through them one by one, getting to know their inner workings.

How about you guys? What can you do?

Started as a hobby a few years ago then as my projects became larger and more complicated, my knowledge just grew as a side effect. Tis includes, web design, seo and server management. Quite a nice skill set seeing as though I have never been formally taught any of it.

Very nice dude. I think it's better that way, because some "formal teachers" are seriously lacking in many areas IMO.

Yes definitely, the fields that I have actually had formal education in can relate to that haha.
 
I worked 13 years at Fortune 100 giant Honeywell Inc - fabulous company - memorable experience and the knowledge acquired is irreplaceable...

When trained at that level - the skill sets are invaluable when it comes to setting up ones own business...
 
SEO. Started out in highschool, a lot of years ago. I had a local sports blog set up and basically without doing SEO i found myself getting traffic and rankings (at that time I didn't know what rankings were, I had no clue what keywords are). That intrigued me and I started documenting on SEO and IM. My life wasn't the same again.
 
Started with QBasic when I was young, the next thing for me was PHP in highschool, from that I went directly after money and started with wordpress and building websites monetized by adsense, learning keyword research, etc. I always had strong attraction to money, even when I was a little kid and didn't need them :D
 
I started out wanting to be a journalist, then became a pro gamer - we needed somewhere to share our videos so I built a website (this was before YouTube)

Then I went onto build more sites and eventually worked out you could make money with this internet malarkey!
 
i have started blogging in getting traffic, design of site etc makes me to learn many things SEO, codes etc. then went to SEO field and other things which makes me more good from time to time.

And still learning one of the best sources are:
BHW
Backlinksflorum (OLD Closed now)
Google a lot of searching
W3school
etc

And many blogs/web sites who do case studies etc it's excellent experience when I see my past :)
 
My learning started when I was in college, I was more interested in I.M. then my actual College work. Funny thing is that, what I learned in college has nothing to do with what I do now really, but its always good to have something to fall back on! :) I mainly learned Web design and SEO while I was starting out. BHW played a big part in my learning! :)
 
I started to program in college but most people never really got it and I spend a lot of time programming on my own. building some simple games and apps that helped me to get hired, building a game mod, etc... Only got better at it over the years.
"spending time" is probably the most important aspect here.

Edit: a few years back I created a very nice facebook application, I got a few thousand users, but didn't know where they were coming from... so basically had no idea on how to market it, then I found BHW and a few years later now, I think I can now compliment both skills since I feel I understand IM enough by now.

I don't have much skill in web desgining or anything like that. I started my career as Social Media Provider (only FB Likes)
I was contact by one of the guy from Freelancer.com ., he started giving me project of likes (he was the middleman between client & me). I saw that many of his clients . Like this went ahead by crushing my competitors in that field. I also use to take away my friends customers also and other guys also (we used to work in a group) so I knew which page work he got and then I talked to the clients offer him my service in lesser price than my competitors. This went for 1 years. I made few bucks that :)

Then Facebook Tsunami came and my pages got deleted and my service got over.
Was really depressed because I had no work ., nothing to do .

Then I joined BHW .,.. I always use to read others journey and use to dream I'll also make money like them .
Then I meet one guy here. He helped me with JV in CPA network. , taught me lots of things.

Then I started building FB pages again with help of my friends and started working with other guy .,,same as JV !!

Qucikly I understood , there is not much money in JV,
I was still newbie in cpa world but still wanted to work and wanted to here in this field. I took the help from guy nearby my house helped me in making landing page and signed up on clickdealer and then made 300$ in 3 days and thus my journey in CPA started.,,

So i was a programmer doing C programming and writing sockets .. and here comes my boss .. yo ..we need someone to fix the internet connectivity .and that was 15+ years ago .
went from a programmer to a hacker ( in the TRUEST sense of the word )
into sys admin , running linux on thinkpads , solaris on shit it was NOT supposed to run on , writing code for MACYs level department stores
.now i manage networks , do cisco network consulting ..fucking around in IM and only step into SURE SHOT things ..
but what i have learnt if very simple .. be honest in your dealings , do your level best ( never your second best )
people CRAVE competency .. fucking get off the teet and DELIVER

web-tv. since it can't install anything we had to write programs to get around its limitations. like transloaders (move files from server to server) and file managers.
 
started 4 years ago doing PPV + Clickbank Direct linking, no sales
but i discovered IM which i didnt know back then but changed my life forever
