How effective is putting something (like a pen) in the envelope?

At the end of the day I guess my point is you asked the question as to why he did it.

You were considering sending out pens, and asked us why dice? If you are going to just tell us pens are the best way to go, then go do pens! The most productive thing you can do is get out there and do it!

But if you are really on the fence, which I think you must be to have asked us such a question in the first place, then A|B test it. Send out 50 with pens, and 50 with dice. See what works better. Don't take our word for it, just see which makes YOU more money.

(Also re-read 7878s thread, he specifically said the dice were not related to any catchphrase. It was important that they seemed random and without purpose.)

It doesn't have to be a dice but it has to be Unique

You can go with Ace Card ... Maybe A Chess Piece .. Its unlimited. But Curiosity is what you are looking for..

At least this how I would do it

I have done this method from 7878 2-3 times with my own twist some years ago... i created a 2-3 minute long Video to explain my service (Local SEO & Social Media for small business) and ordered 200 of this USB Keys http://www.digipromo.de/tl_files/digipromo/images/produkte/gross/usb key mit logo-1.jpg

And ordered 200 wooden boxes like this http://www.ukgamesshop.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/standardwoodenbox.jpg
I have analyzed small business wich advertising in local newspapers etc..and allways ready to invest for more clients/costumer

then I put the key with my video and some seo reports about the website from each company and a letter in the box with the title "your key to success"
I got 5 clients for ORM and 7 seo clients, 3 from they are still my clients for over 2 years now...
if you want get clients...you must try always to be different and do not to be afraid to spend money

sorry for my bad english :)

My buddies dad is a real estate agent and he sends out magnets with his company info at the top and the Eagles (our local Football team) schedule on the bottom. So not only do they feel something and open it up but his business card is essentially on their refrigerator for a few months.

This a cleaver method and an old one too, but very effective, i should try it one days, thanks for reminding me

Put a dildo in the package. THAT will get their attention.

Yes, but what would your headline be?
"stick your competition in the ass?"
"want to feel good about your website?"
"whats the point in having a dildo without batteries? Well this is like having your website without our seo"

I read a post on here where someone used a poker chip instead of dice with something along the lines of "are you ready to cash in your chips?" the point of it all is to stand out and distinguish yourself from the rest. be creative

The line I used was 'When you're ready to cash in your chip, give me a call' I find poker chips to be quite good!

Putting something unusual inside the letter as opposed to a pen, makes the receiver want to read your letter to find out why the hell you sent them a poker chip etc.

Its all about the margins
How much is a client worth to you

You'll have much more credibility if you put something in a box for your clients.

I will be sending out 500 - 1000 letters soon (not just the 7878 method, doing like 5 other services) - will put dice in half and a pen in the other half and will report back with results in a couple of weeks. I know there are other factors in the respondents but it will give us an idea.

Update?

haha class,

you could put an extra strength condom in, and with a headline such as "looking for the ultimate in website ranking protection?"

just make sure its not a used one.

I've used this in conjunction with a sachet of lube, using two different headlines: "Social Media: Don't knock it til you've tried it!" & "Slip right in.. infront of your competitor that is!"

I think that pens with your logo are fine but I also think that the dice can work. Dice can suggest risk, so what you can do is mention the word risk in your letter, such as, "do you want to take a risk and let the competition win."

When I did the 7878 method for rep management I sent a pack of that powdered Vitamin C called "Emergency" and I landed a client on about 30 letters, which then lead to at least 5 more SEO clients.

I think that it is a great idea. Who could not use a pen? And if it has your logo on it, then every time they use the pen, they will be reminded of your business. It is a professional way to send something that will be useful to everyone.

Putting mysterious white powder in an envelope ends up being a really bad idea. You will be remembered but for a lot of wrong reasons.
