PaintShop Pro vs. Phtoshop vs. Other?

I know everyone has their own goto program when it comes to creating designs, but what I'm wondering is either is easier to learn than the other. From my experience, it seems as if PaintShop was way easier to learn than PhotoShop. Then again there may be something even simpler than either, asides from the default 'Paint' (lol).

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone who's never designed in their life that wants to try creating their first logo? I'm open to any suggestion or insight.

My feeling is that the more features a product has, the longer the learning curve will be. It's a trade-off that depends on your needs.

Whatever you use now, you'll end up with Photoshop, so better to start learning it.
There is a bunch of tutorials for beginners on the net.
When you catch basics, start doing logos, learn along, and after that you'll be ready for many things.

I go with photoshop.
I dont consider myself a designer, but it took me a few days to learn the basics of this robust program (I obviously had a video course to lern from), and thats all I needed to create my info-graphic sales copies. PH makes it very easy for you to access "special effects" without having to go through any tedious technical stuff.

I think photoshop can and will handle any graphical needs and, for the small(ish) learning curve, you get a skill that can go a long way into your career.

Don't think about any other software but Photoshop. I started using with no knowledge at all but after a few tutorials and trying to create stuff on my own, I've picked up a lot. Try doing one or two tutorials everyday and you'll learn how to use the software in no time.

Aaahhh here we go again ... Photoshop is for creating and editing photos and not for designing logo's!!! Logo design is done with Illustrator or Corel draw because it's vector based!! To the OP, try to do it with Paint if you're just doing your first, but if you really want to learn it right you will have to go with Illustrator or Corel draw, every professional designer will tell you the same thing! It takes a while to learn but you will get far better results!

I partly agree with you, but first step should be Photoshop in my opinion.
He can make everything he need in Photoshop one way or another, and if
he want to continue learning and go pro, he can learn Illustrator easily
at that level of expertize.
Know any good designer who knows Illustrator but not Photoshop?

Yes, but people are just to blind or stupid to believe us ...
That is the problem these days with those so called "designers". Everybody thinks he's a professional and thinks that it's easy and they just keep on using photoshop because the learning curve of illustrator is steep ...

Every good designer knows how to use both, but will only use photoshop for what it's made for, image treatment!

Line between PS and AI is so thin now, PS has many possibilities, not just photo manipulation. I use it for many things, and doing it faster than with AI, especially for web design needs. I design logos with ease in PS. Of course, they are all scalable vectors and smart objects.

Taking your path learning AI, and AI has very steep learning curve, OP should learn PS after AI or at the same time? PS is a must anyway, if he want to go pro. He'll want to import some pics he need into AI, also. And those pics usually need some photoshoping first. But, we don't know if OP plan to be professional designer.

Nothing touches photoshop for all you design and graphics needs. Not too hard to learn. Just look up Lynda or Total training for comprehensive courses that will get you to a flying start. May as well learn and master the industry standard.

I agree! But it's just an advice i give to everyone who ask me the question what to use. When you want to be a designer you have to learn them all, fireworks, photo shop, in design, illustrator, ... the whole creative suite!

Imagen when your client needs vector art for screen printing, promotional products ... He might be very pissed when they pay you to design a logo and then find out that you did it in photoshop and he has to pay another $$$ to have it converted to vector art for all there printing needs ...

I agree with that. For every designer AI (or similar vector graph app) is a must also. I had hundreds of customers wanting vector from jpg or rasterized psd. I usualy get memos in word, powerpoint, small sugar bags, even on fax copies. And they usually don't know how much work is needed for tracing.
