Question about Directories and SEO

Hi guys,

I'm building an App for a local business community here in the US. As a part of this I'm adding a business directory which will be a responsive website that will sit inside the App.

Here's my question;

As I see it I can set up the website on it's own URL or I can set it up in a sub directory of my main website. If I set it up on it's own URL I can probably milk it for SEO juice to my main website. If I do this my directory will compete with their directory and I may upset the customer!

If I set it up in a sub directory I probably wont get any link juice and I don't run the risk of upsetting the customer.

My question to the experts out there is;

What would you do in this situation?

Sub-directory or sub-domain, it's still just an inner page and will pass link juice all the same if they're inter-linked. It'll be dependent on your page authority or PR.

If you start a new domain, you'll have no domain authority, and would have to build up page authority just as you would with a sub-domain\directory on your main site. I'd say stick with a sub-domain or otherwise just a directory on your main domain, and not "compete" but "work for" those by allowing them to list their site\business on your domain for "their" promotion.

Yes that did occur to me to just add the directory as a part of my main domain and let things develop from there,

I personally prefer a smaller lengthed, single level sub-domain name then a directory after a domain, I personally believe it's more aesthetically pleasing and easier to remember. It looks more professional essentially IMO.
