Youtube Staff Answers View Question!

So one of the Youtube staff members has finally answered my question and this is what he said:

Hi Bobby,

We?ve made a change in our public-facing view counts across the site
that will enable us to consistently reflect what is considered a
'view,' based upon video consumption, video streaming and spam
filtering. This only affects view counts from February 25 moving
forward.
Implementing this change also caused view count updates to slow down a
bit in general; many people have noticed this and we're aware of the
issue.

So basically we all know they were updating something to fight spam. My question now is so what is considered a "view"?

My guess is that YouTube is trying to combat things such as Tube Increaser and Tube Spinner by making it so that you have to view a certain time length of the video for it to be considered a view.

What does this mean? It means that programs like the ones mentioned earlier, are going to be worthless. Not to mention if one is created to do exactly what is needed to count as a view, the amount of time needed to increase the video's views will be a heck of a lot longer. Thus resulting in a hell of a lot less views per day you are able to create.

Just my thoughts though.

all this does is put more money into the pockets of the programmers who make these products.. The buyers are ones who suffer.

I heard they are making it so a percentage of the video has to be played before they count it as a view. That's just wat ive heard tho..

All I know is that whatever they do, they need to do it fast because I want to make money.

all they are probably doing is counting a view only if the video plays for longer than some kind of threshold lets say 5 or 10 seconds. They might start only counting unique views, meaning if you hit the video from the same 100 proxies a 1000 times, they might still count it as 100 views. Or they might just start giving more worth to unique views than duplicate views in their algorithm. I'm surprised it took them this long to implement something like that. All it means is that future youtube view increasers will need to consumer more processing power, run more threads, and use more proxies, which i don't think is a problem what so ever.

I know youtube is loosing money at a alarming rate...I think were all thinking way to hard on this...its probably something as simple as a timer...youtube has no money right to spend updating the whole system...They are using crazy bandwidth

Many companies have tried and failed to emulate YouTube's success at capturing an audience. But despite their undeniable popularity there's one thing the viral video leader has yet to accomplish. They haven't made a single penny in profit.

At the Supernova technology conference YouTube's Director of Content Partnerships Jordan Hoffner was brutally honest about obstacles to attracting sponsors.

He said "We've seen that because of the increased fragmentation of audiences, brand advertisers that we deal with - Coca-Cola, Proctor and Gamble, General Motors - feel like they're missing something. They want to know how you reach a large number of people with a small amount of money."

Maybe the larger issue is that he assumes a lack of understanding is at fault, rather than a flawed business model. Maybe a service like YouTube needs to be an add-on to another business in order to make money. Having an interesting product is great for attracting traffic, but not all traffic can drive revenue.

In the case of YouTube they seem to be running into the perception that becoming more commercial means not being YouTube any more, and maybe that's a fair criticism. If so, it means that in order to have advertising it needs to somehow blend into YouTube's existing service instead of altering the service to include advertising.

If anyone has figured out how to do that they haven't let YouTube in on it.

I just started using Tube Increaser 2 days before this happened and some of my videos are stuck at 200 +- still. Oh well, I can always upload more. Consume their bandwidth and video hosting. Fun while it lasted.

lol thatd be so stupid if youTube only counted 1 view per IP. What if a video is really awesome and so it draws back the views to watch it 10 times, it deserves 10 hits (if not more). Why doesn't youtube just make a threshold of 10 hits per day per IP? Theyre stupid.. Not that I want them to do that or anything..
