Local SEO but not local keywords

I was wondering if is worth for a local business to do SEO when there is NO local searches.

For example: a plumber located in Sewickley - PA

Keywords that have search:

- best plumber services

- plumbing services, etc

Since it's a local business, would it benefit from broad searches (I think so, but no sure about local potential customers looking for that service)?

What do you guys think?

If your main core business rely on local searches, it is wise to target in that area.

No you have to do local. I mean they arnt going to be providing services halfway across the world if you happen to rank for those other keywords. Its useless. Plus the people who are looking for services in the area will be using the city keyword with it anyways.

If the local business is willing to pay for flights, hotels and meals to do some some plumbing then sure why not.

You have to target these general traffic terms.

You will also get traffic from local people who search without the city name, because of the IP address location.

Remember that when you search exact, you are only getting traffic for that exact phrase, in that order. If you live in Sewickley, PA and search for "Sewickley - PA carpet cleaning" you will not get traffic stats for "carpet cleaning Sewickley - PA".

In your case, you need to do your research in phrase match. This means you will see the traffic for "Sewickley" and "carpet cleaning" no matter the exact phrase used.

What you are looking for is traffic keywords, if the keywords have general traffic, a certain amount of that will be local, even if they do not use the city modifier.

If there is business there, there are searches.

I'm asking because when I look for local keywords like "plumbing services in sewickley" on google keyword tool, there are no searches for these keywords... so maybe there is not many people looking for the service, or just using general keywords...

Maybe they never key "sewickley" in the search. But google is very smart and will base on their IP to show the nearest business provider in that area.

Target all of the above. With a local client in the plumbing industry the search terms are pretty straight forward since there are not many different variations a potential customer will use to find their services. If the keyword tool doesn't show any results for search volume then that does not mean that you will not get traffic from that keyword. Just make sure you target more keywords to ensure that they are going to get that traffic.
