How long does a penalty stay?

Hi everyone. I bought some google+ followers last month that turned out to be coming from a bot. In that week, my SERPs dropped really bad and unnaturally. I'm thinking that my site has been penalized. Can someone tell me how long such a penalty stays?

I think penalty last almost forever. If the domain would have been re-registered to someone else, and a new website + content been changed either, this might remove the suspension; otherwise, I'm afraid you'll have to contact Google, and fix your website according to their TOS
 
Results are shifting a bit today, I'd wait it out before taking action.
 
It takes forever as long as you don't remove the causes of your penalty.
 
The guys who commented earlier are right. You should consider buying a web service to find the bad links and after that you have to disavow them.
There are a lot of such services like linkdelete.com or removebadlinks.com. You might also consider a new service that looks like well improved linkquidator.com - it also offers 1 month free trial.
So, it's up to your choice!
 
First of all, It's not a Penalty but sandbox. No Google Algorithm has been announced to cause a penalty for suspicious social signals. Try buying some fb shares,likes and tweets for the site/page to even out the social activity and build a few quality backlinks manually. It should bring back your lost rankings.
 
now a days google busy in destroying websites , RIP GOOGLE
 
I agree with this. My site went down (almost 80% down) when I bought some fiverr social gigs. After waiting for 2 weeks I started building quality links and did some promotion on facebook. 4 weeks later my site is back to normal traffic levels

Forever seems the penalty, thought sometimes maybe not penalty, but ranking been reshuffled that could last for 2 to 3 weeks. Google plus seems to be able to sink sites now, maybe can work out a negative SEO solution for that.
