WTF Google takes screenshots now?

Just noticed that chrome browser platform takes screenshots of the sites when new tab is clicked. It shows 8 most visited sites and it has not just sites but screenshots of it.

Here is a sample from google images:

Yes, chrome takes a snapshot of pages that visited recently. When you open a new tab, all snapshots of recent pages are there. This is not new to me.

I just noticed that it's the actual screenshots not just the sites screenshots.

Correct, it is a snapshot of the actual page you've last visited.

This isn't something new. Google Chrome shows actual screenshots and even firefox.

Chrome has been like this since its early days, and I personally do like it.

As far as I know these are stored locally. Every time I close Chrome, I always run CCleaner to cleanup unnecessary temp files stored locally.

I think that the chrome "account sign in" is not stored locally because the whole point of it is to store the chrome browser settings on remote server. This is like a spyware that has access to all of the data.


You can see the screenshot that they got access to non Google products as well, same goes for banks and other "non of google's business data."

according to their privacy policy, the data is stored locally. Account sign in will store the settings/config/bookmarks on remote server. Snapshots are not settings/config.

And btw, it will not store those things even locally if you use the "incognito" mode.
